Product Description

Review

"This is a well-conceived and provocative new work. Forging Gay Identities should raise the level of sociological sophistication in gay and lesbian studies while interesting students of culture, social movements, and inequality." - Frank Dobbin, Princeton University

From the Inside Flap

Unlike many social movements, the gay and lesbian struggle for visibility and rights has succeeded in combining a unified group identity with the celebration of individual differences. "Forging Gay Identities" explores how this happened, tracing the evolution of gay life and organizations in San Francisco from the 1950s to the mid-1990s.

4.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, but Good Read 9 Feb. 2015

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Although I do like how well written the work is, especially with its easy-to-follow subheadings, I do feel it spends an inordinate amount of time explaining what the "rest of the book" will be about. It consistently summarizes chapters over and over again. It does, however, provide ample support for its statements and I suppose the repetition would be good for students on term papers who need "main points" to talk about.
