The manual gives you a good description of the events of the Last War.
It describes clearly the troops, the tactics and the targets of most of the factions involved in the war.
It also considers the roles of the Dragonmarked Houses.

Very useful to give a great Background to your PCs, to create the "War/day-after" mood in your campaign and it also includes a chapter for setting your campaign at different times along the Last War
Not "a must" but very close to it!

If You want to run a campaign set during the great war this book is great. It does contain information on how to run flashback games, and time travel games for players in an ongoing Eberron Campaign. This book is good Fluff for people interested in the great war, or having your characters actually tied into the great war sometime in their past. So, for what it's worth I liked it. It won't do me much good in the game I'm running currently, but if I ever start a new Eberron Campaign I'll probably use the info provided here to help players get a better background for their characters.

Forge of War provides a terrific amount of history for the Eberron setting. Players can use the information to help develop back stories for their characters, and DM's will love the tools it provides them. There are rules for running "flashback" adventures, time travel scenarios, or just placing the entire campaign during the war. There are adventure ideas throughout with the history section, along with new spells and magic items. I highly recommend this product for anyone that wants to add depth to their Eberron campaign.

This is a great book for anyone who is a fan of the Eberron Campaign Setting, and would like to have a better understanding of the Last War. The first chapter details the lead up to, course, and end of the war with ideas for adventures sprinkled throughout. The second chapter provides statistics and information on the major armies, mercenary forces, locations, and countries involved. The third chapter provides inspiration on ways the Last War could have affected your character from various backgrounds and "scars of war" you can incorporate into your role play to more common player character boons like magic items and new spells. The fourth and final chapter contains advice on how to incorporate the Last war into an Eberron Campaign, either by events that happened in the past effecting the present or by going back and being apart of the war. Included in the chapter are some new monster stats , but DMs should keep in mind that the stats were written for 3.5, and may need tweaking for a game using Pathfinder rules. There are some minor issues I had with the book itself (like few of the maps had no legend so some of the information is either confusing or just not explained) but most of these do not provide an obstacle to its use.

However, a word of warning. The book I purchased was listed as "New" however the book I received had some slight water damage (wavy pages but everything was readable) and smelled faintly of soap. Be prepared for even "new" books to have some damage, especially when considering that this book has been out of print for 5 to 6 years.

The reading is a good story, gives a lot of great depth of the 5 Nations.
It doesn't give tactical maps, or advetures. I was hopeing for a Hack&tactics game to come from this book, but no maps. Still a good read, and an entire history on the national relations of the 5 nations.
The opening artwork is worth it alone, a vast Karrnath Zombie army in full charge against a Brelish Warforged army. Too cool.
Unless you are going back in time, or really, really deep in international relations, its not neccisary to run Eberron.

I love the Eberron setting but this book was not only boring but nearly useless. It gives lots of background but not much for actual play dynamics.
