First released in 1984, Footloose now enjoys the same sort of semi-ironic nostalgic cachet as John Hughes' contemporary schlock-fests about angst-ridden teens with silly hair. This is partly due to the fact that, as breathtakingly predictable kids-against-the-squares romps go, it's really pretty tolerable, but it's mostly because of the soundtrack. The songs that appear in the film--notably Kenny Loggins' infectiously vapid title track, and gale-force screecher Bonnie Tyler's excruciating "Holding Out for a Hero"--are possessed of an awfulness so monolithic that they have transcended their era and become reliable floor-fillers at 80s nostalgia discos all over the western world.

The plot, such as it is, sees the eerily androidal Kevin Bacon playing a hip rock & roll youth from the big city rebelling against the strictures of the conservative small town in which he finds himself living. Inevitably, he falls for the daughter of his nemesis, the local preacher (the latter, it has to be said, is played with some aplomb by John Lithgow, who very nearly wrings depth from a character otherwise straight out of the colour-by-numbers guide to movie-making). Inevitably, there are some dance sequences. Inevitably, the kids win out, and the grown-ups realise that maybe they aren't so bad after all.

On the DVD: Footloose can be watched on disc, should you so desire, dubbed in German, Spanish, French or Italian. There also subtitles available in pretty well every European language, as well as Arabic, Hebrew, Russian and Turkish. Other than that there are no extras. --Andrew Mueller

There is only one word to describe this film. Fantastic. It's one of those films where you kinda know good will prevail, the baddies will get their dues, and the guy gets his gal, but it's the music that holds the film together.
The music keeps your feet tapping from start to finish, and the last few scenes of them dancing in the barn having been given permission to hold a dance is worth waiting for. Ok, so the dresses and the tuxes are 1980's and I wouldn't be buried in them, and Lori Singer is the worst actress ever, but the energy of the film and the feet stomping music makes you want to watch it again and again and again.

I really like this film, because it feels like a nostalgic trip to the eighties, and the acting is great. I think the score is excellent, although the dance sequences could be better.That doesn't make the film any worse though, and I like the fact that the plot is all to do with the urge to dance. Kevin Bacon's particularly good as well. The reason I gave it four stars is because it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

I think this film is brilliant. If you love dancing and 80s music and especially Kevin Bacon then this is the film for you. It is about a boy called Ren McCormick who has moved from the city to a Midwestern town where music, dancing and all youthful joy has been banned. He trys to prove to his town that music can bring out the good in people not the bad.
This is a great film and for people like me who love any dance films and films like Dirty Dancing they will love this.

My friend's a huge Kevin Bacon fan so when she bought this DVD and suggested that we watch it I thought it would be a good idea because I have a great love of 80s-themed stuff. The plot's pretty lame even by 80s standards - Kevin Bacon plays Ren McCormack, a dance-loving teen who's forced to move to a midwestern town which has banned music and dancing because of an unfortunate fatal accident a few years ago. He meets the local preacher played by John Lithgow and falls in love with his daughter, Ariel, played by Lori Singer. There's also excellent support from Sarah Jessica Parker as Ariel's best friend and Christopher Penn as Ren's physically dyslexic buddy. The outstanding soundtrack includes such classics as Kenny Loggins' title track, Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out for a Hero' and Deniece Williams 'Let's Hear it for the Boy'.

Although the majority of the film is fairly cheesy it's well worth watching for the dance sequences and the contemporary fashions which regularly turn up on international catwalks. I enjoyed it and at 103 minutes it's the perfect length for any girls' night in.

It's hard to imagine what effect this very 80s film has on young people now, but if you were the age of the characters back in 1984, it exerts an irresistiible pull, right from the very 80s pop on the soundtrack, the clothes, the hairstyles, and a certain energy without edge. The world seemed a more naive place, even though the banning of dancing in public seems unusual, as has occurred in Bomont ... Kevin Bacon (Ren) arrives from Chicago and tries to overturn the ban, gets romance with the very pretty preacher's daughter (Lori Singer), gets a best friend in Chris Penn, who he teaches the dance moves to, and locks horns with the preacher himself (John Lithgow). It's a measure of the skill of the film that the Rev. Shaw Moore is drawn with some subtlety, being very opposed to book censorship, and actively stopping the burning of titles at a local school. Behind his support for the dance ban is a personal tragedy that the film blends in very well to the story about the kids in their last year at school. The dance sequences are very enjoyable, Bacon and Singer look superb, and Chris Penn is also a complete winner - it's the film to bring out the winner in you ...

Completely agree with Tom, this film has got it all, actors before they were famous, some excellent 80's music (songs like the title track 'Footloose', 'Lets here it for the boy' and that classic by Bonnie Tyler 'Holding out for a hero'), some great tight jeans and amazing hairstyles. You won't find anything better from the 80's era.

well tom and sarah's words are quite profound.The best of the 80's is all packed in here with krazeee comical performances from everyone's favourite jon lithgow.I just wonder whether it's all supposed to be funny.Only bettered by Back to the Future as a soundtrack as well as a film.A true gem!

Nowadays remakes tend to be very unpopular with film fans. However, the remake of Footloose is a surprisingly entertaining movie with decent performances and does a far better job of being faithful to the original and also being different compared to other recent remakes.

The remake was actually the first version I saw so when I decided to see the original I was unsure what to expect. However, the original is a very good movie with a great performance from Kevin Bacon who dances like a professional.

All in all the orginal is defiantly the better film, but the remake is still a good watchable version whether necessary or not.
