Manufacturer's Description
Highlight new features for the PC / MAC include:
3D Match Engine - This year's match engine has seen more testing than ever before having been extensively beta tested in Football Manager Live for the past year.
The famous Football Manager match engine can now be viewed in full 3D with motion captured animations for the players. Sports Interactive has been working on the 3D match engine for nearly 3 years with the support of SEGA Japan's Virtue Striker team who provided the motion capture data and some of the animations.
You can now watch your matches in 3D from multiple camera angles and re-watch any part of the match by fast forwarding and rewinding the action using a new match time bar that flags the key moments in the game.
The old 2D view of the match engine is still there, especially for those people whose computers aren't powerful enough to take advantage of the 3D views.
TV View - Watch your matches in new full screen TV view and customise your match day screen with widgets to view the information you need as a football manager, be it player performance, match action zones, pitch radar, latest scores and many more.
Assistant Manager Feedback - Pre-match and in-match feedback from your Assistant Manager on how the team is performing and your player's motivation levels, as well as hints on how your tactics are working and how you could outwit the opposition's tactics.
Improved Media - SI have worked hard to reflect the greater impact the media has been having in recent years on the world of football, in the in-game dealings with the press. The game now features more news stories, more detail and greater media interaction than ever before, creating an even more realistic simulation of the football world.
Press Conferences - Attend pre-match and post-match press conferences with local and national journalists and build up relationships with them over time, but choose your answers carefully because they could come back to haunt you in the media at a later date.
Transfer System - Completely new and re-written transfer system code, providing an even more realistic simulation of real-life football transfers.
Transfer Rumours - View the latest news on what players are being speculated on, and who's said to be interested in securing their services.
Board Confidence - Following on from its addition in Football Manager 2008, board confidence has been expanded and improved. In addition, the board will now also offer feedback on your squad harmony and your club's stature in the football world.
Preferred Moves - Train your players to learn 'preferred moves' to add to their game. For example, train central defenders to not dive into tackles, or wingers to do step-over's before crossing the ball.
Female Manager - For the very first time you can now play as a female manager. All of the text in the game now also has a female gender so the game represents female managers and staff in the game in the correct gender.
Realistic Finances - SI have listened to feedback from all of their researchers to try and model every single financial area of the game correctly for each country, including transfers, staff wages, budgets, ticket prices, season tickets, competition bonuses and club sponsorships.
Updated Competitions - Fully updated for the new 2008/09 football season with all the latest league, club and player data, featuring over 5,000 playable clubs from over 50 countries, and around 350,000 players and staff from around the world, drawn fresh from the famous Sports Interactive database.
Widescreen Support - As a result of usability testing on Football Manager 2008, this year sees widescreen support for the game for the first time, as well as lots of tweaks to the user interface for easier navigation.

A lot has been said about FM2009 which had me wondering if I had made the right decision to buy - and to be honest with you, they did worry me, the reviews here were all about DRM, bad servers, ringing pricey calls to get a code etc, but I bit the bullet and opened the cellophane - to my delight! First off, I entered my code into FM's code lookup system, and they gave me the right code, so I wasn't fiddling around for hours trying desperately in vain to get on. I did get an error from Steam, but that was because Steam was trying to update, so FM couldn't install. So I fully updated Steam, and it worked like a dream. My PC, (Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Intel Pentium 4 560, 3600 MHz, 1024 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM), RADEON X600/X550 Series (128 MB)) worked perfectly with the game. It was all installed within around 10mins from start to finish.
I know a lot of FM purists were rather annoyed with the new 3D view, but I quite like it, you're in the action now, instead of watching blobs running around. OK, in FM08 I enjoyed that, but it's cool that we now have it in completion. The only bug bear I have is that it stops and the commentary at the bottom carries on, I'd like it to keep up with the action!
Everything from FM08 is here - including the new scouting system, which I found a lot better than FM08, though he had preset jobs, for example he started scouring South Africa without asking me! Cheeky!
My team, Paris St Germain was complete and I like the way it's realistic, as it says Claude Makélélé is their top asset. Also it says Mickaël Landreau is an asset in goal, which is very true. I have not tried it as Liverpool yet, but that's my next thing to do.
Overall I felt this was a good game, there is obviously things that annoyed me, like the lag in displaying the action in 3D view, and the fact I had to activate it, but really it doesn't bother me, as long as it keeps working and I don't think I will use it on another machine. I was going to put it on my Mac too, but I doubt they'll allow me to do that, which is frustrating. I can understand Sega's position with piracy, but I think there needs to be trust on both sides to make it work. People who work hard for their money do not like to be treated as criminals by the system, yet on the other hand the piracy system is hacking the system before you can say goal, but that's not really a point to overstress in a review.
I would recommend this to anyone who loves their football, it's good, sleek, but does have a few bugs, which I really hope Sega sort out soon. As for all the reviews complaining about poor activation - I am glad I didn't over dwell on it, because I would have lost out on a fun game. I do understand their pain though, the activation server down on day one was not good, but now it's over, lets just play the game and have fun. Seriously though, give this a shot, don't be put off, what's the worst that can happen? Try the demo.

I've been a CM player since 2000/01 season and stopped around CM4 when SI Games left the Champ Man franchise.
FM2009 is my first move back into mainstream SI Games (01/02 being a fantastic original which kept me occupied until now) -- and I have to say I AM NOT DISSAPOINTED!
The 3D match engine was probably the part that got me to buy this game. Apart from some jerkiness and slowness at times (which can be annoying!) it is a great addition to the game and allows you to watch your team in action in a way you are perhaps more familiar with from the hours of TV football you watch, than a text/2D match engine. Its far from perfect - but it allows you to see your tactics so much clearer in my eyes - even if you are a seasoned text reading fan from the old days.
I'd like to stress that although there were clearly many issues with early releases of the game - these are now gone as far as I can see. I agree with many that is pretty bad form on SI Games part to release such an unfinished product and I am shamed that so many fans seem to have been lost through this risky quick release strategy - but if you are buying now - go ahead its a good product and has many features that seasoned and new fans will enjoy.
Not least the far easier training schedule builder!
All in all - as long as SI Games dont pee around with their fans so much in following releases Im sure I have been brought back to the more moden game - and im here to stay!
5 stars given because the game is 5* good NOW - if I were to have bought the game at the time with its many issues - I would have rated much lower no doubt (take note SI!)
I've been playing FM for donkey's years since it was CM back in the day. So I was hoping I wouldn't hit these Steam issues.
I put the game on both my PC and Mac and on the Mac side there is no need to use steam, so it just went straight on. I had no issues registering the game with Steam on the PC side, but I found that it is much harder than it used to be to download patches. This was only the case for the PC patches though and as I almost always play on the Mac- no problem!
The game itself is as excellent as ever, definitely the best yet. The 3D engine works brilliantly on my Mac which is a 2009 Mac Book White. No issues there at all. As usual there are many bugs that require you to download the patches in order for the game to work properly but overall very pleased!
I was having loads of issues on FM 08 with it crashing, this hasn't crashed once in over 3 weeks.
I don't see how people can give this game 1 star if they haven't played it?! I think it's the best yet...love the 3d engine, the pre and post match conference is ok, although the questions can get a bit repetitive after a while, and I think it's harder than ever, which isn't a bad thing.
Still the best footy management game by a mile.
