Product Description

Product Description

This Album presents some of Englands finest folk musicians performing a selection of songs and instrumental music. These recordings have the air of spontaneous, impromptu performance, a coming together to make music, which is one of the hallmarks of the folk music scene. It is as is the recording engineers were allowed to eves drop on the music making – and captured frozen improvisations. The variety of sound on this album is remarkable and the number of instruments and voices involved produces some remarkable programmes. But don’t be fooled by the apparent ease – these musicians work hard, rehearsing and arranging behind the scenes (or discreetly working and honing their style during a jam session in a quiet town or country pub). The result is a carefully crafted music, which honours the past but which, like all living things, moves on and develops. Next time they play and sing the results will be different. The old folk melodies of England are honoured and respected are treated as raw material for high quality music making.

From the Artist

Folk Music from England presents songs from throughout the country. Local songs from Lancashire (tracks 9-11) rub shoulders with the Lincolnshire Poacher. Morris tunes mix with sailors' hornpipes, drinking songs and songs of harvest and hunting as the recording celebrates the mixture of seafaring and country living which has marked the development of England over the centuries

For a taste of folk music of England this is an excellent place to start.
The album presents songs from all over England. There are songs from Lancashire, Morris tunes, Sailors hornpipes, drinking songs, Seafaring songs, songs of country life, songs of the harvest and hunting songs. There is a good representation of the development of England and its people through the selection of songs used in this programme.
Another fine thing about this recording is that it was recorded live in the church of St Micheal and All Angels Summertown Oxford. This is good because it offers the less clinical element found in studio recordings. The result here is a recording with a spontaneous performance and an added improvisation that would be the true feature of folk music.
Added to this factor is the excellent sound that is really very good considering it was recorded live in a church.
Also of note are the musicians themselves. They perform superbly and offer a rich sound board with a variety of instruments. This is achieved by performances from what is essentially three groups of musicians. "The Amber Quartet" start things off and We get vocals and drum from the wonderful Ian Giles who has appeared on many folk recordings both on his own and in other collaborations such as the group Magpie Lane. (Who are also based in Oxford)
"The Amber Quartet" appear on tracks 1,2,3, and 12. And Ian Giles also appears on tracks 5,6,7,11,15,17 and 18. And fellow band member John Spiers appears on tracks 6 and 8. The second group is "Dr Faustus on tracks 4,13 and 14. and finally the group "Dragonsfire" on tracks 16, and 19.
The instruments used are things like mandolin, guitar, flute, serpent, recorder, fiddle and melodeon.

I usually don't expect much from anthologies, and the fact that this one comes from "The Gift of Music" was not promising. However, I was astounded at the great music and wonderful performances. I plan to try to find other recordings by some of these musicians.

Value for money it reminds me of the youth when I visited a lot of folk club in and around Hanley. Alas none of these in Cyprus so I listen to memories and talk about the good days.

Available from the Past Times shops this CD was recorded in an Oxfordshire church and is by local folk singers who treat the songs as a classical musician would rather than updating them as Steeleye Span.
Obviously no one knows what folk songs sounded like in the 16th century but maybe this is how when no one would realise some of them would last
