It's most likely that you've only heard the smell of rain. I was at first amazed at the scale of Mortiis' history. His work with the Norwegian black metal band, Emperor, to the darkness of Keiser and Crypt Of The Wizard. This record, Fodt Til a Herske (born to rule) is Mortiis at his best. The ambience is pure genius. Sadly the original version of this album (featuring some nice extras) is hard to come by, however once you listen to this you'll see the music alone makes up for that. Both tracks are almost 30minutes long, i find it best to listen to when reading or late at night when going to sleep. Like Mortiis' old work this album will sadly dissapear in time, i urge you to get it.

'Fodt til a Herske' (meaning 'Born to Rule') was Mortiis first venture into the world of dark ambient music that he became well known for after leaving Emperor in the early nineties. What he gives us is two 25+ minute tracks of medieval sounding synth music with very dark. mournful and menacing themes that work ideally in providing the atmosphere they set out to.
There is absolutely no resemblance between this material and the later electro rock of 'The Smell of Rain', which is also a fantastic album, but if its dark atmosphere you're after, then you can't go wrong with this title.

as Mortiis himself described the album. A majestic instrumental composition with only two tracks taking up over fifty minutes, which lets you immerse into the imagery of a dark medival fantasy world. The way Mortiis constructs his songs seems like he's trying to tell a story, it's however sort of repetitive. Nevertheless Mortiis is one of the best composers of majestic ambient. The album is a very successful solo debut for this new style of Mortiis after he had played for Emperor for a few years. Don't look for much similarity between the two however. You should definetely consider getting latter albums of Mortiis where he's style developed gradually and becomes more varied.

This is hardly a very exciting record. It is two long tracks of eerie keyboard noise with occasional medieval type sounds of some destruction flittering in to add menance.
It certainly creates a very strong dark ambience. If like me you really enjoy that and want something to listen too while reading, this might be for you.
