Installation was very straight forward and pain free compared to the old interface I had. Downloaded the drivers, plugged it in and it worked. I use Cubase 7 and everything synced up perfectly without any hassle whatsoever. Latency for me is about 30ms and max, 5ms at minimum so there's no problems there. I noticed a substantial increase in audio quality compared to the onboard laptop drivers i had been using previously. It also comes with a good few additional software and plugins.
The interface is very intuitive and well designed. The 2i4 provides phantom power so it's just a case of plug and play. The gain knobs flash green when the audio signal is at a suitable level which I have found to be extremely helpful.
All in all this gets 5 stars because I simply can't find anything wrong with it. It just works.
Only consideration is that, if you plan to use headphones to listen back to the audio, bear in mind the headphone jack on the interface is 1/4 inch, not 3.5mm so you will need an adapter. but you can get them for 2 quid so it's scarcely an issue and not a fault on the 2i4's part.
I recommend this product for any home/bedroom producer just starting out but truth be told I see this lasting me for quite a while so even more experienced folk could consider this a viable option.
I use Logic pro X as my DAW and the 2I4 is very simple to set up and use with it. I have also used Ableton live in the past and it is also easy to set up.
The 2I4 comes with a 48V phantom power capability so recording vocals (using a half decent condenser mic- I use the RODE NT1-A please see my other review) is very easy and produces a very impressive, high quality professional sounding recording.
Latency (i.e. the lag you get whilst listening back to the input signal through our DAW) is essentially non- existent. I really appreciated this especially when recording over other tracks/ live.
Overall a very impressive audio interface and arguably the best available in its price range. If you're looking to start up your own recording studio/record professionally or as a hobby, the sound quality and simplicity of the 2I4 makes it, in my opinion, the best out there.
It's good and solid, has weight to it, it's well-built with quality knobs and dials, gives a great sound after a bit of tweaking and latency is pretty much non-existent straight away with no need for fiddling about with the settings.
Also came with a big Loopmasters folder full of samples, I don't usually use samples but I found a few in there I've put to good use, also comes with a couple of plugins for effects which is a nice bonus and also comes with Ableton Lite, and though I had no need for it as I already use Ableton Live it was reassuring to know I was getting an Audio Interface that would work well with Ableton.
It was definitely worth the money to get this, I allow myself one extravagant purchase per month (per payday) and I'm absolutely chuffed to bits with this one :)
Whenever I need a new piece of audio equipment Focusrite are gonna be my first port of call from now on.
Would give 10 stars if I could.
The 2i4 is supposed to be a ultra low latency interface. For those looking to achieve breakneck guitar rhythm patterns you will be fine when using an amp simulator via the units monitor input. However, if you are going direct in using plugins, this is where you will struggle with a DAW like Cubase.
I can't speak for mac users but on a Windows 7 machine with an intel i7 and 8gb ram the 2i4 struggles in 64bit on Cubase 8. Generally the Cpu usage in Cubase will be running at about 25% when idle with it running at aroung 75% with a bunch of guitar plugins on. After building up a project I was running into annoying dropout issues regularly. The 2i4 does fair better on Reaper however. Overall I found the 2i4 to run better in 32bit mode and its possible that this is down to an issue with the focusrite drivers that are doenloaded from their website.
The 2i4 comes with a set of free plugins that I found unusable for what I needed although the reverb plugin is quite handy.
I was initially impressed with the build as it is a beautiful looking unit however after 6 months the monitor dial began to crackle when it was turned. If I had owned it for 10+ years I would be forgiving, but for one of the units most useful features this was very disappointing.
The 2i4 doesnt have any obvious control panel when working in your computer but it can be found when typing focusrite into he command prompt where a direct latency control can be found. I normally pin this the to taskbar so it doesn't get lost.
Although this is low latency it comes at a cost.Read more ›
