I have always been a great fan of horror novels since I started reading them as a boy in the early fifties and over the years have amassed a large collection, mainly paperback copies and I am now replacing those available with Kindle Editions. This re-organisation has also given me the chance to revisit books that I have not read for a while and try out authors that are new to me. David Whitehead is not new to my bookshelves, I have been reading his western genre novels written under the pen name Ben Bridges for years but somehow this horror story had escaped me and so this was the first reading.
It is a first class eco-horror-thriller of the quality that brought the genre into the monthly best seller lists in the 1970s and 1980s when the scene was dominated by the best of the horror writers, including James Herbert, Graham Masterton, Guy N Smith etc. THE FLUTTERING is up there with the works of the masters, a skillful, well paced and totally believable novel of medical research gone wrong. The story has all the required elements, mutant bats, a mad scientist and a race to save the world from a viral disaster.
It is one of those novels that you just can not put down, I read it in a single all-night sesssion; I have now reached an age where I do not require much sleep but get easily bored and so spend most nights either reading or watching classic movies. I will now add this to my 'read again' file to revisit at a later date. A must have for the horror story collector.
The Kindle Edition: Well formatted, I found only one spelling error. 5/5
