About the Author

P. Anastasia is the author of the new YA urban sci-fi book series Fluorescence and several forthcoming fantasy-fiction novels. Though she has worked in graphic design for well over a decade, writing has always been her passion and she began attempting to write her first novel at age 11. She wrote news and editorial columns as well as designed graphics for two different campus newspapers while working toward her college degree. After graduating with a BA in Communications, she began to follow her heart back to her publishing aspirations with her debut series, Fluorescence. On the side, she serves as a professional voice talent for radio, TV, audio books, and has produced over 3,500 recordings for businesses across the globe. She firmly believes being a writer is not about writing what you want, but writing what needs to be written and faithfully retelling the stories of your characters no matter how uncomfortable they may make you.

With the grim reality of facing on the brink of extinction, a dying race of aliens decides to choose a few teenagers in order to preserve their race. However, it is certainly proving to be somewhat of a difficulty, in particular for the victims, of whom already have many complex daily issues to contend with, let alone a life-changing secret that will affect them for the rest of their lives.

Of course, the aliens never really let go that easily, especially when Alice, our main protagonist of this book discovers that there is more that meets the eye. The dialogue and topics discussed between the characters are also surprisingly real, i.e. the affections for a boy, dreary eyes, boyfriend material, humorous bantering, teenage flirting etc...

Furthermore, the balance of science fiction alien theme combined with teenage drama is well judged, with neither themes overpowering each other, and with the promise of the series is going to be narrated from different characters.

Firestarter is certainly a great introductory book in what is turning out to be quite an enticing YA science fiction themed series, especially with its refreshing and unique appeal.

Overall, regardless whether you are a science fiction, fantasy, or teenage romance fan, there is something for you all in this book.

At first glance, this book doesn't feel much different from any other fiction aimed at teenage or young adult readers. The language and the use of slang from the 2010's seems to indicate that the intended audience is for post-Millenial science fiction fans and there are several tropes present that are omnipresent in teen/young adult fiction which may discourage more mature readers, particularly where the characters are concerned.

However, the novel begins to gain momentum roughly halfway through the story. As the first book in a series of four, Fire Starter is narrated by a young girl between 14 and 15 years of age who experiences her first love. The events of the novel and her interactions with her boyfriend cause her to mature in her outlook. This is reflected much later in the novel when the reader is exposed to much darker and more mature plot points.

In short, the book is off to a slow start but be patient. The story does get more interesting and the pacing, combined with a multitude of twists and unexpected turns of events will make it worth your while.

Worth a read, very interesting concept with a lot of potential.
Wish it was a little more sci fy in it like cooler powers or more alien stuff; but i'll hold out hope for that in sequels.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's nothing like being a teenager forced to carry alien DNA. 18 May 2016

Fluorescence: Fire Starter by P. Anastasia

Picked this up for free, not expecting much, but it's after 1 am and I just have to write a quick review. I'm not young, by any stretch of the imagination, but I thoroughly enjoyed this YA Sci Fi book. The plot is intriguing and suspenseful, the writing is excellent and it seems surprisingly believable. There's enough description, without too much, and the character development is very well done. Not sure if I'll buy the rest of the series, but I'm seriously considering it. All in all, Fluorescence is a great start to the series and it seems to easily cross age, gender and interest lines. Even those (like me) who are rarely interested in Sci Fi should give this book a read.

This book is clean, containing nothing more than kisses and a little mild profanity. Don't take that to mean it's boring though. This is a very well written book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't like this book 10 Dec. 2016

The story could be interesting, but lack of action, cheesy, spread over, story and girlish attitude all over. Sorry, but it is a boring read where one waits for something to happen just to find another slice of emptiness. Teens at that age tend to question things and not to blindly follow whatever was thrown at them as in this story. "We have to do it because we were told to do so by aliens" does not seem like believable plot.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved the idea of aliens being involved in the story ... 20 April 2017
By Ashley Tomlinson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I really didn't know what to expect when I started this book. I loved the idea of aliens being involved in the story so I was kind of excited about that. The entire concept sounded interesting to me so I gave it a shot. I don't think I was disappointed but I'll have to read the rest of the series before I can make a decision on that.

The main problem I had with this book was the age of the characters. It was difficult for me to picture them as fourteen and fifteen because they felt older. Reading the heavy make out scene felt weird thinking they were so young. Yes, I am aware that fourteen-year-old make out but that doesn't mean I want to read about it. Maybe because I remember being an awkward fourteen-year-old with frizzy hair and braces, I was so not attractive.

I did like Alice and Brian together though. I thought they were cute even though their relationship moved kind of fast at first. I loved Alice's friendship with Sam too. I wished there was a little more of Sam because she was entertaining to read.

The Saviors were impatient jerks, though. I mean that ending made me cringe because I thought it was a little ridiculous. It didn't stop me from immediately buying the second book, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall, I absolutely LOVED IT! 11 Jun. 2015

I am anxiously waiting for Volume II to arrive in the mail after reading Fluorescence: Fire Starter. As you read the chapters, it's like your going up a flight of stairs; you slowly learn on what's happening until you finally made it to the top to learn a HUGE reveal. There were some parts that made me giggle or made me go "AHA!". The characters are wonderful; they each had a unique background (Brian is my favorite). The author did really well telling the story from the main character's perspective, Alice Green. I enjoyed the romance and mystery, I couldn't put the book down because there were so many moments where I REALLY wanted to know on what's going to happen next. Overall, I absolutely LOVED IT! I highly recommend Fluorescence, I believe any reader will enjoy this face paced series.

I am so ready for Volume II Contagious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Work! 26 April 2015

I am a member of the Baby Boomer generation and had never read a book from the category of Young Adult prior to this one. I was not certain it would hold my interest, but I was definitely mistaken about that. It was not only a great read, but one that has left me looking forward to Book 2. Congratulations to the author on an impressive first novel!
