Product Description

Sleep Party People has confirmed details for a new album. The new record Floating, will be released through Blood & Biscuits (part of the Pink Mist collective of DIY labels). The album was recorded in San Francisco with Jeff Saltzman (The Killers, Morrisey & Blondie) and Mikael Johnston (The Sounds, Jane's Addiction). The first track to make its way online is the disorientating In Another World. Sounding like the sonic version of falling down the rabbit hole, its a gloriously macabre offering with strings swirling around thick basslines to create a mood that - for those already in the know - is unmistakably Sleep Party People, but more potent & forceful than ever before. Sleep Party People is the brainchild of Brian Batz, a Danish multi-instrumentalist with a boundless imagination. Taking as inspiration the work of Boards Of Canada, David Lynch and Erik Satie, Batz found the sound of the old battered piano in his apartment, coupled with a freaky electronic alteration of his recorded voice, created an eerie, hypnotic sound.

There aren’t many bands that can induce a mild coma whilst being obscenely interesting. Brian Batz and his Sleep Party People manage it nicely. With an uncanny ability to blend the fairly unique stylisations of dream-pop with almost any other music genre, he’s able to not only captivate an audience but to feed their brains with delicious beta waves.

The band’s third album, Floating is a haunting journey through the corridors of the dream world; an enchanting ride on a night-time train. The voyage glides almost seamlessly between the varied landscapes of this world with extreme lucidity. Although Brian Batz has been on the other side of the planet in bustling San Francisco recording the album, the big, empty and open world of his native Denmark are clearly audible throughout the album.

Single “Another World” tickles the intrigue with an opening guitar line that sounds like it could have been recorded on an old analogue dictaphone in the midst of the Spanish civil war to lament the loss of a brother or son. A listlessly driving beat kicks in and melds with the otherworldly string section to create a semi-apocalyptic atmosphere that turns the dream into an endless pursuit down a long and desolate corridor into the darker realms of sleep.

The instrumentation on Floating is in a constant state of flux, the only constant being the ghost-like and melodious voice of Batz providing the narrative to an ascent up and away into the endless skies. Each individual instrument sounds like it’s been injected with a tiny pocket of air to aid this buoyancy.
