After the popularity of the Twin Peaks soundtrack, David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti collaborated with Julee Cruise to produce this fantastic album. Includes songs from Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet.
Lynch's lyrics come straight from the dark side of the brain, as does Angelo's music. And Julee's voice floats it all right up to radiator heaven.

When Angelo Badalamenti was scoring "Blue Velvet" for David Lynch he wanted to use This Mortal Coils, version of Tim Buckley,s "Song To The Siren for a key scene in the film. Great idea, except the song rights proved way too expensive, so it was suggested that Badalamenti compose a song in the same style with Lynch providing the lyrics. Badalamenti also wanted a vocalist who could mirror Liz Fraser,s powerful haunting performance and remembered Julee Cruise who had sung in a New York theatre production that Badalamenti had overseen. The result of this was the ethereal siren song "Mysteries Of Love" which figured prominently in "Blue Velvet"
Thus were the foundations laid for "Floating Into The Night" , one of the truly great albums by a female singer , though of course Cruise was,nt the writer . Following the positive reaction to "Mysteries Of Love" Lynch and Badalamenti collaborated further ,writing an exquisite selection of lush torch songs and marshmallow pop songs that gave a salient nod to Lynch's, obsession with his classic nostalgic obsession with America. The album was released in September 1989 ( a terrific year for albums) and featured in Lynch,s bizarre but brilliant TV series "Twin Peaks" with Cruise herself making cameo appearances as a nightclub singer.
Julee Cruise has, of course a voice like an angel in full on angelic mode while inhaling angel dust and it,s used to consummate effect on this album. "Falling " which featured most heavily in "Twin Peaks" has that distinctive twanging bass line and creamy keyboards while Cruise,s vocals glide serenely over the top. Then there is the finger popping "Rockin Back Inside My Heart", all glistening chords, lugubrious melody and body swerving middle eight.

Rises in rolling waves and twirls with the glowing flames this album then drifts in cotton wool dreams as Lynch, Badalmenti and Cruise create a wistful, vapid, aura, capturing the nostalgic essence of suspended moments of time.

Julee Cruise blows and coos into the 50s microphone, to lull and soothe the fetid brow, with tales of sonic bliss. This can be placed in the tray to obtain a laid back, smooth gliding ride into the white clouds of fluffed and puffed languidity. An accompaniment to horizontal inclines, whilst meanwhile a bed of sharpened razored barbed nails lies suspended in silent rows waiting to catch the unwary lying just under the surface.

This was written and produced by "David Lynch" (yes the film director)and "Anglo Badalamenti" this was the team that gave the world "Twin Peaks".
This album is a wonderful showcase for the delicate purity of "Julee Cruises" angelic vocals, that against the music of "Badalamenti" constructs a ghostly etheral wash that evoke the dark passion of desire.
Ben Websters warm saxophone and the occasional shimmering tremelo of guitar activates the sense of drama that used to be found in 50's pop this effect is also heightened by "Lynch" lyrics which eerily manipulate the listener with pharases of pop cliche.
This album is all about atmosphere, the dark and mysterious one that it conjures up, it does this wonderfully, sit back and enjoy.

I remember Falling from the twin peaks series years ago. Sadly this album does not contain the series instrumental as it truly was a wonderful piece of music. This album has a sound inspired by the david lynch series twin peaks. What truly amazed me was Julie cruise. She is not a young woman and can sing so beautifully. Many thanks to david lynch and Julie cruise for giving us this great album.

With this first collaboration between the singer Julee Cruise, David Lynch (lyrics) and Angelo Badalementi (music), an incredible musical and surrealistic universe invades our ears. Indeed, this album contains original songs, but also work from precedent David Lynch projects (eg: Mysteries of Love for Blue Velvet, and also Falling, Nightingale and The World Spins, three songs that were in Twin Peaks). Thematically, those artists present to us the concept of Love with such a grace and poetic images that it enables us to rediscover new aspects from the David Lynch films, but also to engulf our imagination, inviting us to discover romantic images, hidden deep within our subconscious.

As such, this album is a real pleasure with which we can discover images of dreams, other aspects from David Lynch's works, and also - and most importantly - the incredible power of Julee Cruise`s voice.

The oddly titled Industrial Symphony is where this disembodied doll came from,a film which made little sense but Julee Cruise wore some great dresses one of which appeared on a 12" single. So this sleeve is literally a waste of space which does her no favors. The booklet at least shows a photo of her so I reversed it in the case
In fact Jullee Cruise who appeared on a TV show here with 2 other girls made No 14 with the song Floating in late 1990 and again at the end of the decade with Hybrid
Probably music by her is hard to find nowadays especially the soundtrack CD Until The End Of Time where you can find her cover of the Elvis song Summer Kisses Winter Tears
