The story consists of first person narrations. First his story, then her story. As always things are never as they seem. It is 1957 when Bryce moves next door to Juli. Juli is forceful, even at age 7. Bryce has great hair, eyes, and smile. Juli is bright and has personality. Byrce's family is somewhat shallow, except for the grandfather. Juli's family is poor by comparison but they have different priorities. The story quickly moves to the seventh grade when Juli realizes that Bryce, while good-looking, may indeed be shallow and not the person of character she should be seeking. Meanwhile, Bryce realizes his short comings and sees that Juli is a person of substance. In addition to the good back and forth for what may be expected for kids that age, it includes as a bonus a good father-daughter relationship film as Juli learns what she needs to know about life from her father. What is good about the movie is that the characters are real. They are not all good or all bad, but human beings attempting to do what they think is right in spite of their flaws.

This movie has an indie feel, and is enjoyable to the young at heart for people of all ages, but may be especially enjoyable to seventh grade girls.

Rebecca De Mornay is barely recognizable as an early 60's mom.

One scene of "violence" when Bryce's dad slaps his teen daughter for calling him an a-hole.

Really Good watchable movie for a weekend..well filmed, well cast - it seeps nostalgia and is a family friendly film which will delight.. predictable plot but it is soooo good to watch you don't even notice...

Centred around a young girls view of her 'crush' and the boy's view; its a must for a slow sunday..

The film is perfectly put together. Romantic comedy with excellent acting, characterisation, and screen play.

It actually helps that the lead male's acting is a bit wooden, as he plays someone who has no grasp on life, doesn't understand the direction given to him, and is completely unable to express his feelings, or understand even his own motivations let alone the people around him. Who would have thought that bad acting and good acting could be so similar.

I think the writers and film makers should make a sequel, where the lives of the father and grandfather are explained.

Was so happy to find this as this was one of my most favourite books when I was a child. The film is actually very close indeed to the original, both in the way it progresses and actually how I imagined it. I think the book was intended to be set a little further forward in the future from 1950s, but it still worked very well.

My only gripe with this film is that certain very important scenes in the book felt very rushed in comparison in the film. Having no experience of only watching the film, I don't know how dramatic these scenes would be if you hadn't previously read the book. Some key elements were changed to make it PG, and I know that's how film certification works, but I really felt one scene near the end really lost a lot of impact because of a small change in dialogue. However, other people seemed to enjoy them so I'm sure it's fine!

Other people have mentioned Bryce was pretty wooden, which I do agree with. However I also felt that it partly felt like that because those scenes I mentioned were so fast. Either way, very enjoyable for me to re-live my favourite book and I would recommend reading it as well if you enjoy reading.

Superb choice for a pick-me-up feel-good movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the story-line, the acting and the setting (scenery). The fact that there are no "big name" actors actually works well here, as you believe what you're seeing, they look like real people in this or that situation. The story is quite straightforward to get (and to know what to expect), however, its the way that is told that is quite original and uplifting (the way men/women or boys/girls look at and understand the same thing is VERY well explored with this style of narrative). There were several laugh out moments for me - especially when we switch from one viewpoint to the other on the same subject and you just see how easily things can get "lost in translation". I highly recommend this movie to anyone, families including, as it's just a great mood uplifter :)
