HASH(0x962fb840) out of 5 stars Relaxing, but Jordan's signature style is there 9 April 2014
By Mike Tarrani - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
First, this album begs to be combined with Two Loves because they were recorded together over the course of two sessions in Copenhagen on November 25 and December 2, 1973. The two albums share common tracks, but some titles are not duplicates, but different takes. In fact, as you scan the track list here you will see that.

Listen to the sound samples first. They will convey the essence of the music better than I can describe, but I want to provide a few personal comments about this album. Mads Vinding's bass is fairly prominent in the mix on most tracks and this is the first opportunity that I have had to truly dig into his playing. I've heard him on numerous other recordings, but apparently I never really listened with the critical ear that this album provides. His tone and approach is quite unique and this album is why I have moved him up into my relatively small pantheon of bassists.

Jordan's playing has his signature style, with a hint of his fire here and there, but is also relaxing. Part of the reason is the choice of songs, but even On Green Dolphin Street, which normally is played with a Latin groove in the A section and a swing feel in the B section, is more of a swing feel in both sections. The fire emerges on a few tracks like Jordu, but for the most part this album has a different mood.

I'd be remiss if I failed to mention how much I enjoyed Ed Thigpen's drumming on this album. He has been a strong influence on my own professional growth, and he adds his usual tasteful touch to every track here. He is not as prominent in the mix, but he is exactly where he should be in it.

Overall this is one of my treasured Duke Jordan albums. While most of his peers who started out in bebop sort of lost their relevance, Jordan evolved and remained completely relevant his entire career, and this 1973 album is a mid career showcase of his work.

Just suprised to see no comment at all on this splendid album.
Maybe too european style on that?
Don't compare this to a cheap melancholy compliation.
Totally different level it has. Try its deeper feeling inside.
