I agree with virtually all of the positive things the previous reviewer has said about this
wonderful dvd.
However. One thing that really bugged the hell out of me was the way whoever was
directing/editing the dvd performance would cut to a print of the Dutchmans ship
at certain climactic moments.
Especially the wonderful finale.
Most distracting.
Apart from that i'd recommend this performance.

The Savonlinna Opera festival productions are staged outdoors in the courtyard of the grim Olavinlinna Fortress in Finland shown in the film. We are apparently watching a live performance and it is a pity the director decided not to show the audience and the auditorium which must be quite dramatic and seats an audience of 2257. However we can be grateful for watching the DVD in the comfort of our homes as the nights in Finland are very cold and the audience is advised to bring thick coats and possibly blankets to keep warm!
This is a very fine production on traditional lines, with the stone inner walls of the fortress providing an unusual backdrop, and permitting flexible use of an unusually wide stage, simple props are used to good effect, with a brilliant realisation of the Dutchman’s ghostly vessel.
The cast of Hildegard Behrens (Senta) Franz Grundheber (Dutchman) Matti Salminen (Daland) and Raimo Sirkia (Erik) is a very strong one and they deliver a superb measured performance under the baton of Leif Segerstam. Grundheber provides the outstanding performance bringing out all the pathos and suffering of the Dutchman’s terrible fate of sailing the seas endlessly with just one day every seven years to find a wife and redemption.
Lighting and photographic quality are very good, and the outdoors performance gives the sound a very clear natural quality, particularly for the voices, although the orchestral texture is a little bass light.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a Good Enough Production 11 Nov. 2014
By Chris Reich - Published on Amazon.com

This is very decent production of a superb opera. The singing is very good. Behrens is great in the role of Senta and delivers near sacred music in her arias. It's beautiful. Salminen and Grundheber are superb and the lesser parts are excellently presented.

The grand party chorus is terrific. Makes you want to jump up and join them---grab a mug and do it!

I did find the slow camera tour of the castle during the overture to be annoying. I'd rather just watch the orchestra. There are too many cutaways to the water image. The annoyances are minor.

The ending is what cost this DVD a star. The old Dutchman is boarding his ship, Senta is torn, Erik flashes his gun and we fade to a fake water image as Senta walks toward it. It's poorly conceived and misses the impact of her choice.

Still, it's Wagner and done well. I would not pay top dollar for this DVD but it's a bargain at current prices. Buy it while you can still get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very fine performance; there is no perfect opera performance or perfect singer! 31 Jan. 2014

I just received this DVD two days ago. This production has everything: Franz G. is a great Dutchman and looks, acts, and sings the part very admirably; Ms. Behrens is a sweet-toned Senta; Erik and the Steersman are very fine tenors; mistress Mary is a delight. The chorus is splendid as is the camera work! Great color and ideal atmosphere. I am glad that this Dutchman was not performed in an opera house. All involved with this production have given their best.
Occasionally the intonation is a little off including the orchestra. No big deal. I have attended opera perfomances in San Francisco, Seattle, and in a few parts of Europe. It is the the TOTALITY of the performance that counts. I did notice a couple of times a one or two second break in the video. I am guessing that all performances were taped and the best scenes were edited to make this the best experience possible. The same thing happens with The Ring under James Levine.
Lastly, the very great basso profundo Matti Salminen adds much more than just a few great "Finnishing" touches to this wonderful production. His diction and intonation are impeccable. Bravo, bravo to the Savonlinna Opera! Thank you all very much and ALOHA to all from Honolulu! I LOVE this DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wagner--The Flying Dutchman 12 Dec. 2015
By James D. Weinberg - Published on Amazon.com

Even though this piece of music is a failure of Wagner by some critics. I have always loved The Flying Dutchman. Hildegard Behrens is fit for this particular piece of music as well as the other members of the opera cast. The orchestra is great and by being close by the old castle is what adds effect to this piece of music. If you are a Wagnerian Opera Buff like I am, you will love this piece of music.
4.0 out of 5 stars Regarding Subtitles 30 Sept. 2016

It is a matter of taste whether you will like this production, and plenty of pros and cons have already been posted here by others. One thing I can contribute is the answer to a question I had when debating whether to order this disk or not: Subtitles. Yes it has them in English, German, Spanish and French. Amazon did not indicate this where it usually does, at least at the time of this purchase.
5.0 out of 5 stars I think Wagner would approve! 19 Aug. 2013

Of the few renditions of this opera available on DVD, I chose this one because I was familiar with one of the lead singers. I love opera but am not qualified to remark the vocal qualities of singers voices, I just know what I like, and I liked this one. The singing, acting, and orchestral playing moved me to understand the story better, and to appreciate Wagner's music even more.
