Product description
An updated version of the 1930s serials, riding on the back of the science fiction craze started by 'Star Wars'. American football hero Flash (Sam Jones) is dragged from Earth to the outer reaches of the Universe where he must battle the evil dictatorship of Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow). He is helped by technical wizard Dr Hans Zarkov (Topol), the winged Prince Vultan (Brian Blessed) and the brooding Prince Barin (a pre-Bond Timothy Dalton). Ex-'Blue Peter' presenter Peter Duncan makes a cameo appearance, while the soundtrack is provided by Queen.

Before we start some universal truths about flash gordon
1.Sam J Jones's acting is terrible
2.Melody Anderson's acting is terrible
3.Topol & Max von Sydow are playing it while there tongues are firmly placed within there cheekiest of cheeks
4.Timothy Dalton & Brian Blessed are a joy
5.The soundtrack is faultless (no no its true it is!!)
6.when watching it having not seen it for a while it makes you feel like your 9 again!
Now on to the review..
Basic storyline
A originally unknown force is causing earth to suffer from bizarre weather annomallies which causes a plane carrying Newyork jets star quarterback Flash Gordon & a female reporter Dale Arden to crash. Leaving the wreckage they arrive at the home of Dr Hans Zarcov who has a theory (wild though it is) about why the weather systems are acting so strangley As we discover the doctor ever ready for these types of problems seems to(for reasons we will never truly know)own a rocket which after forcing Flash & Dale to get on board with him flies them of to the planet mongo where All the questions get answered while flash battles his way through diffrent planets, civilizations & massive Brian May Guitar Riffs!!!
The story is predictable & after noting those 6 truths about flash gordon you might ask why 4 twinkling stars have been given for such a hit & miss film.
Basically its one of those films where it is bigger & better than the sum of its parts, i always feel like its a hyper-active child of a film wanting to be Sci-fi with slight nods to starwars & other popular titles but just as it settles in someone in charge decides "enough of this lets have flash fighting of mongo gaurds in the style of a weird american football style fight!!" while poor dale freshly smitten on her new fella feels obliged to do an impromptu cheer leader clap dance thing..GO FLASH GO, GO FLASH GO!!!
(seriously you have to watch it to believe it) then Ming (the baddie) Brilliantly played panto baddie (Max von Sydow)with his weirdly accented daughter(Ornella Muti)...who lets face it is the Mongo bike Daltons Had her the doctors had her & by the end the bore worms have had her!!! she is an intergalactic slut of epic proportions!!
But yet i digress
The headliners could fall by the wayside its the support that sells the film Blessed & Dalton turn it up to 11 & thankfully dont appologise for it also little bitparts for peter duncan & richard o'brien.
once youve watched the film you realize no one other than queen could have done the soundtrack justice...It is THAT good!
I just find as the final credits role you feel happy youve been able to escape into a world of winged warriors forrest men & gold skinned dwarfmen it truly is a film that makes me feel like a kid again every time i watch it
The shortage of a 5th star is due to its HD transfer.. It is left lacking if i can be honest but my 4 stars are for the great film & the bonus soundtrack disc you get aswell all for less than a tenner
thats it from me & hope you agree!!
HAIL FLASH YOUVE SAVED YOUR EARTH HAVE A GOOD DAY!
Fast forward to 40 years old and I’m re-watching as a Star Wars fanatic and Star Trek sympathiser. Plus I love the likes of Ghostbusters and Guardians of the Galaxy.
At first I was taken aback by the quality of the comic imagery in the intro. It’s so crisp I wish they used more of it somehow. That crispness follows through into the image quality of the movie in general. I know nothing of cinematography, but having grown up watching the films I mentioned earlier, I’m used to a certain look. Flash Gordon is totally unlike anything I’ve seen before.
The picture quality is so crisp it looks very raw and the sets are vast, expansive even. It’s totally got a theatrical vibe to it. Like a film that was made in 1970 but for some reason wasn’t released until 1980.
I’ve watched it three times now, once with the commentary and the commentary helps massively for someone coming to it virtually from scratch. It’s really growing on me. Yes, it’s a bit hammy and the fighting is a bit lame, but for each slightly poor moment there’s Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton and those wonderful background effects. Also, Max Von Sydow is fantastic as Ming.
Overall, this will become a favourite but it will take a bit longer because it’s so different to what I grew up on.
Also, the music is legendary, of course.
Flash Gordon is based off of the 1930's comic strip by Alex Raymond. The film follows Flash (Sam Jones), an all american blonde haired quarterback for the New York Jets american football team. Returning from holiday on a plane with only one other passenger, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) they are hit by some freak weather events causing them to crash into a building of the scientist Hans Zarkov (Chaim Topol) who forces them to go into a rocket with him knowing this weather is not natural. From there they end up on Mongo, run by the all powerful emperor Ming (Max Von Synow) and Flash must show the different factions of Mongo how to fight back and rebel against him.
The plot isn't going to win any awards and nor is the acting but there are some classic sequences and great lines from Timothy Dalton, Brian Blessed among others, it's simply great campy fun. There are rocket bikes, ship assaults, an arena fight, weird creatures, old fashioned model special effects, it's just great and all this with a film in which half of Sam Jone's lines were voiced by an impersonator!
The soundtrack was written and performed by Queen full of their iconic sound and plenty of guitars throughout. "Flash, ahhhhh he's a miracle!" It couldn't be any more perfect for the film.
The blu-ray is pretty devoid of content, just a couple of commentaries but this was made long before film extra's were a thing so it's kind of expected. The picture quality also isn't very good, more like a low end dvd but at the price it is though, I doubt it matters.
I'm not going to lie, this isn't a good film in a traditional sense by any stretch but if you've got an open mind, Flash is funny, colouful, retro campy fun.
Recommended.
+ Genuinely funny in places.
+ Fantastic soundtrack by Queen.
+ Retro special effects.
+ Diiiiivvve!
