This is a well-made German-made documentary about the Carmona flamenco family from Granada, i.e. los Habichuela. Taking the guitarist brothers Juan and Pepe Habichuela as reference-points, it covers everyone from their grandparents, through their children (who form the nucleus of the rock group Ketama) to their grandchildren! We see them at home, practising, performing and just chatting.

How good it is to see young children learning music this way, through osmosis and perpetual encouragement, rather than by the conventional Go-into-that-room-and-practise-and-don't-come-out-until-you've-got-it-right classical methodology that my wife (for instance) had to endure.

How happy the grandparents must be to see their progeny happy and successful, after what they themselves had to go through under Franco (described briefly but graphically).

So full marks for this DVD from me. One touch I particularly liked is that most DVDs have about 20 seconds of theme music which, if you don't choose one of the menu items, repeats endlessly. But this one has a beautiful Fandango de Huelva that keeps going until you get to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Look into the World of Flamenco 27 Nov. 2012
By HoyaGirl - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this video a while ago and just re-watched it again. It is so wonderful how beautifully this video is put together. If you are a fan of flamenco, this is a much see video. The video delves into the history and present day lives of one of the most famous flamenco clans; the Carmona and Habichuelas whose progeny went on to found the very famous, nueva flamenco group Ketama. The interviews were so touching. You really get a sense of this family and how central the music has been to them throughout the generations. It was a nice insight to the Spanish gypsy culture. The historic footage was quite amazing as well. And lastly, the music....just amazing. It inspired me to take flamenco classes locally I was so touched by the program.

My only quibble (and it is a very tiny one) is I wish they had introduced the women in the program. The women of this clan are clearly very important to their husbands, fathers and sons. They deserved to be introduced.

Watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT DVD! 25 Jan. 2010
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Some music documentaries are pretty bad, and I purchased this just because it's rare to see good guitar playing and I take whatever I can get. But I was VERY pleasantly surprised from the first few seconds of this DVD. First, the video quality is GREAT (the contemporary shots, of course, although the historical footage ain't bad either considering how old some of them were). Most (easily 95% of the video) is crystal clear almost Blue-ray-like quality. And then the guitar... it's SO worth it! Beautiful playing, amazing.
4.0 out of 5 stars Las Habichuelas rule. 15 Jan. 2013

As a student of the flamenco guitar who has studied in Granada it was very nostalgic to see the Habichuelas in their home town and although I was aware of the band Ketama I was more interested in Pepe and Juan senior than the younger generations. I especially enjoyed the concert in La Plateria, one of my favorite venues in Granada. This testament to one of the great family traditions of Gypsy Flamenco is a worthy addition to any flamenco afficiando's collection even if it just makes you want to go to Granada to experience it first hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary 25 Jan. 2011

I've studied flamenco, spent about six years in Spain on and off, and really liked this documentary. There was thoughtfulness about HOW it was put together, all the shots, the interviews, the short performances, the stories told about family members...Lately I don't purchase many DVDs (I prefer to rent) but this one was worth buying in my opinion.

If you are into people and like flamenco, nueva flamenco, classic guitar, then you will enjoy this video. Plus it has added benefits of being in the Granada Gypsy quarter.
