This book does exactly what is says on the cover, offering a concise and accessible overview of the life of Henry VIII through key themes that are often included within AS/A2 specifications. I feel that the book is suitable as an introductory text for AS beginners as it contains an excellent opening for wider, independent reading on this topic. The book is not aiming for more in depth analysis and content, students would need to go to books by Geoffrey Elton, John Guy and Jack Scarisbrick if they want something more substantial.

Nevertheless, this should not distract from the fact that this book provides a perfect introduction to the key themes of Henry VIII's reign - religious issues, foreign policy, and Henry's style of government. The book's layout is logical and accessible. I particularly like the short analytical overviews of key historical texts that have influenced thinking on Henry VIII as well as the judicious bibliography and suggested reading at the end of the book.

A highly recommended read!
