The app which accompanies the Fitbit is excellent as is the website and all the aspects of this purchase which I would consider as a kind of after sales service, you could easily buy this and use it to track your sleep and examine the analysis it produces in that respect (which I did recently when I was finding it very hard to sleep and waking up during the night or at very early hours of the morning, it allowed me to identify patterns) and track your daily steps and of course use it as a watch which also has a date read out.
However, this device, the app and Fitbit services/community offers a lot more, there's a stop watch feature, a guided meditation/breathing exercise which I have used a few times (its about as effective as anything at all I have read about deep breathing or concentrated focus or meditation), it records your heart (indicating whether it is in a cardio or fat burning range of effort too, which I liked, I have found that this is at least as effective as the heart beat read generated by the grips on some of the gym equipment I have used at my local gym, ie cross trainers, treadmills).
There are options to track running, weights, workout, elliptical, treadmill, bike and interval training, you select the option (each of which are accompanied by small stick men graphics which move indicating the activity) and press the button on the side in for a moment, pressing it again at the finish, it gives you synopsis of the training which you just undertook. The app tracks this and you can set training goals for the day and week, you can set step goals, you can record what you are eating to better know what your likely calorie deficit will be, you can track what your daily water intake is (a personal trainer advised me a long time ago about over eating arising from the body seeking to rehydrate and hunger could be dispelled by drinking water).
Once you set goals the app generates alerts on the mobile phone when you are close to a goal or if you are an over achiever, when you complete daily targets for steps the fitbit will vibrate and a graphic, such as fireworks, a shimmer on the screen, a space rocket or twinkling stars, is accompanied by the notice that you have completed the desired amount of steps. I know its maybe a small thing but I appreciate all these little motivational tricks and gimicks, they work for me.
I have not replaced the wrist band as yet but am happy that I have the option to or could should I decide to, the range of alternative bands available for this device are great but I dont mind the appearance of the Fitbit as it is with the black wrist band. For me its a stylish lifestyle device and not just a gym or sports prop.
If you are prepared to get a new one after a year then go for it!
It seems like the battery is only holding juice till about a year. My trackers battery capacity dropped from charging every 4 days to every day for no reason.
You can not replace the battery, this service doesn’t exist so if you don’t want to charge it every day or maybe more often you will have to get a new one.
My complaints: the lack of waterproofing is a big one, I mean my phone is waterproof why isn't my fitbit & the screen is quite fragile, mines probably 6-8 weeks old and it already has a fair few healthy sized scratches just from casual day to day life... would suggest buying a screen protector if your getting one.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend it.
