Based on years of research by its two authors, Fit and Proper? details the history of the boardroom of Sheffield United Football Club, focusing particularly on the foibles of the men who over three decades from 1980 tried, and largely failed, to turn the 'Blades' into a profitable business and a successful club.

The context is well presented leading into the Reg Brearley era, and provides a well balanced view on his tenure. The fractious McDonald/Colombotti era is well covered, essentially due to the activism of the various fan groups at the time of which one of the authors was involved. I noted the light in which BIFA are portrayed in this book is, shall we say, slightly rosier than the club or press would believe. Finally, the McCabe era does not get as much coverage, perhaps as a result of the steady and less controversial way in which it was built up. However, I would be interested to read their views on how this has begun to unravel. The authors are clear in their truism that some documentation relating to how the club has been run may no longer be available, but a follow up which charts the McCabe era in more detail would be a welcome addition.
Whilst this is more narrative than analysis, it provides a superb insight to the going-ons at Bramall Lane and makes one wonder how the club ever functioned during some of the more sobering experiences of boardroom politics affecting the stated objective of running a football club.
