The text is concise, scientifically exact, and a very enjoyable read to boot. The basic formula is: "How to turn your body from storing fat to burning fat for energy". The presentation is brilliantly simple, complete and is easy to read - even by pre-teens.
Best of all, the recommended solution requires only a minimal amount of energy and very little in the way sacrifice. The only requirement is diligent application and a very reasonable amount of energy and willpower.
Simply put, "Fit or Fat" cuts out all the fluff and cuts right down to the essential core issue and makes it as effortless as is possible to actually do it.
Over the last 4 decades I have recommended this book to countless friends and acquaintances. Each and every one of them has thanked me for the recommendation.
In fact, the reason that I decided to write this review is that I am in the process of ordering a copy for a friend as a gift.
Good luck with your own quest.
All this is explained in an easy and accessible fashion for the general reader. He warns against health spas that promises to remove fat from specific areas, which he declares is not possible. Passive spot reducing he compares to tenderizing steak -- no fat will be removed. All that happens is the removal of water, not fat. He warns against saunas, sweatsuits, rollers, steambaths -- all a waste of time and money. Weight exercises are also a waste of time. What you get are larger muscles, but the same amount of fat will still be there. What he says that it is impossible to remove subcutaneous fat from a selected spot in the body. It is necessary to reduce fat by a systemic aerobic exercise. He recommends bicycling and never mind the machines in a gym. In short he advocates whole body athletics. He condemns short term weight-lifting exercises as having no value. Only aerobic, low-intensity, long-term exercises works.
These were just samples of his advice. There is much more to the book. The chapters tend to be short and to the point. Book includes humorous cartoons to provide a point that he is arguing. He includes a 12 month program with a log book as a guide to progress. Repeatedly he pushes for exercise six days a week, every week.
Finally he has chapters on nutrition, on the value of carbohydrates and proteins, how much to take and why.
The book lacks an index. Like so many other exercise/diet books he believes he has the solution, but he is wise to show that not everyone is in the same physical shape or metabolism, so he has varying advice depending on how out of shape a person is. The book is short and accessible, designed for everyone. He advocates long-term, low-intensity aerobic systemic exercises, such as bicycling. It is recommended for everyone, and apparently his advice to bicycle has become very popular all over. I only gave it three stars as it was something to read for a class, not a book I would choose for myself. I don't really exercise all that much. Yet a short, easy read.
