I have been planning in my head for days how I wanted to phrase my review; Defy was a book that I had been waiting for with fierce expectation! I will digress here for a moment… I am a HUGE Twilight fan; yes…yes…it is true. And when I have to wait for the next film installment, it is tortuous! lol. Okay, maybe a little overkill there:); but I use this as an example of my tortured apprehensive state, in waiting for the new Raine Thomas book! Alright, maybe I am being slightly dramatic, but I kid you not when I state, I loved Ms. Thomas’s Daughters of Saraqael Trilogy and now Defy in Firstborn Trilogy, book 1
Defy, picks up approximately 18 years later, after the sisters Amber, Olivia and Skye have made their transition to the Estilorian plane, betrothed to their soul mates. Defy is the story of the Firstborn daughter of Skye and Caleb, whose name is Tate. Now, I would like to say, I was unsure how I was going to make the emotional connection to Tate…(Yes, I really went this deep in thought on the subject) I had followed the trials of Amber, Olivia and Skye; really connected with them, especially Amber and well, I wasn’t sure if there would be room for someone new. , lol. But I said “If she is Skye’s daughter, she must be okay”:)
I was not disappointed. Where the lead female characters in Daughters of Saraqael, stemmed from pain, almost tortured backgrounds; disjointed, separated, not knowing who or What THEY were, and finding the strength to move forward into their destiny. Tate, knows exactly from where she came, who she is and is surrounded by love and affection and protection of her family and community. Tate, is shown to be a regular teen; well loved, nurtured and chafing at the bit to see what is outside the well meaning, but at times constricting, boundaries of home and family.
She has been trained by her parents, aunts and uncles, and she shows great prowess, skill and fortitude, but Tate is not allowed to venture past the restrictions her parents have set. She is upset by this and attempts different avenues to see what is beyond. But Tate is unaware of a prophetic dream had by her mother Skye, of her untimely death; and thus the entire family is determined to keep her from that fate.
One day, Tate seizes the chance to slip out of her family’s sight to follow a trusted family friend and her cousin, who were training outside of the protected homestead. All seemed to be well, until Tate is captured and taken away by a huge Kragen, an Estilorian beast who is a great threat!
Tate is taken far away, and is greatly wounded, but a rogue Estilorian warrior who had been separated from Tate’s society for more than fifty years, helps her …but soon Tate is alone, newly healed, no shelter, food, family and no idea where she is, and this is the point where Tate moves away from being that young girl and sets out on the journey of survival. The book moves fluidly, and we see Tate battling the elements and surviving,; She leans on the training from her family, and as she is attempting to remain alive, a search is initiated by her twin brother Tiege, who will not believe his sister is dead. Also, throw into the mix, a Mercesti plot (really bad guys) and the stakes have now been raised. But Tate surprises herself by the fortitude and the skills she shows on her journey. Tate is also helped by Zachariah the lone warrior, who after leaving, soon discovers that there is an unexplained telepathic link between the two. Through this, he at the start begrudgingly aids Tate, but soon the two realizes that there is more to their relationship.
Defy details the journey of a young girl on the journey of becoming a great young woman defying the odds against her.
I could not believe that Ms. Thomas’s storytelling could get any better, but Defy is the proof. Well written, fluid, with major action it draws you in; and attraction between Tate and Zachariah was very intense, it literally kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the interaction between the two, the dialogue and how they understood the other. Tate’s secondary power was being able to see when someone was lying; and with Zachariah, she saw what was true regarding him, even when he had actually believed the lie about who he really was inside…
This is an incredible read that I loved, I hated when that last page arrived…
So for now, I am back in that dark cage of “waiting” not very patiently:)…for the next Firstborn Trilogy book!
I have followed Ms. Raine’s works from the first book Becoming; this is where I fell in love the new world and characters that she created. So it is a joy to have read Shift which proved to be just as great as it’s predecessors… Shift follows the tale of one of the children of the original cast from the Daughters Of Saraquel trilogy, Sophia. Sophia has always felt “different” from the others in her family, smaller, she felt more fragile, and she also hated how she was fairer than the others, in fact Sopia felt herself a freak! But she grew up with her families closeness and acceptance, and her best friend Quincy, a friend of the family, who also was her closest counter part while growing.
But Sophia noticed a change in their relationship when she finally obtained her final form, Quincy became more stand offish, and this solidified her feelings that she indeed was somehow “less” than the others. But soon things change and Sophia comes into her own, when she learns to control her shifts(she is a shapeshifter) and Sophia is one of those who has to go on the journey for the scroll piece; which fast becomes a race to save members of her direct family, but possibly her people….In this journey, she finds out the truth regarding what is happeningwith Quincy, why he is so standoffish…and Sophia also learns the truth in why she is different than the others, and must learn to accept who she is, and embrace where her life is leading, and not how it begun.
Shift (FirstBorn Trilogy,Book2) is a perfect addition to add to your Estilorians collection; a perfect escape into the world that Raine Thomas has created, and what a world! This world is full of adventure, passion, devotion and never can forget love! Shift has something for everyone, and the intricate plotline keeps the reader intrigue, wondering what will happen next, what WILL the author throw next to these captivating characters! This is a must read if you have been following Ms. Thomas’s books and if you are new, then please go back and check out Author Raine Thomas’s other titles and you will become hooked too:)
Check it out guys:)
I was very excited to have a chance to read and review this book. I have been a major fan of Ms. Thomas ever since the beginning books of the Daughters of Saraqael series. So how exciting to have the opportunity to read the last book in the FirstBorn Trilogy!
This book follows the young woman Clara Kate and her journey to stop evil Mercesti, by finding the final piece of the Elder Scroll and to help activate it along with the other seven beings that are destined to activate it. But things are not that simple because, Clara Kate is not focused due to feelings she is having a very hard time ignoring for the Elder Ini-herit, who she had previously been close to and loved back on earth. Ini-herit who was known as Harry, knew Clara Kate as the eighteen year old teen, and fellow resident of Mrs. Clara Burke’s Home, Ms. Burke was their human guardian. Clara Kate was aware while on earth, who Ini-herit/Harry was; although he was unaware. So she had the task of reminding Ini-herit/Harry that he was actually from the Estilorian plane where he was a Corgloresti elder, who had traveled to earth before Clara Kate was born. He was there to re-learn human emotions, and so while on earth his Estilorian memories and abilities had been suppressed. Clara Kate and Ini-herit become friends, blossoming into much more. They faced his transitioning back to the Estilorian plane, which Clara Kate had been a little concerned whether In-herit would retain his memories of their time on earth. The two share a very intimate, first-time event during Harry’s last few hours on the human plane with his promising Clara Kate that he would remember their love, and that she will always be his Angel….
But once back on the Estilorian Plane, it was as Clara Kate feared, that due to the transition, she seemed to have lost her “Harry” and in his place was the very analytical, non- human feeling Ini-herit, who does not remember her at all. Not too long back home, Clara Kate has some shocking news, that at once thrills and terrifies her, especially with the painful realization that the man she loved does not and apparently will not love her. Throw into the mix, she is kidnapped, found to be the next Elder, and being chased by evil. Clara Kate does not know if she will be able to handle it all. But with the love of her family, even if she does not have the love she seeks from Ini-herit, Clara Kate is determined to handle all her responsibilities and walk in her destiny, not knowing if Ini-herit will ever be back by her side.
I will say, I do love Clara Kate, as I do all these feisty heroines in both trilogies by Raine Thomas. But there was a very, very, slight moment when I wanted Ms. Clara Kate out-of-the-way, so that I could have Ini-herit all to myself!:O)
Okay,Okay I am kidding! (kinda:) I love Clara Kate, who was feisty, smart, brave and courageous, who although she discovered news that would make anyone…especially an 18 year old… scared stiff when having to deal with her family, but she handled it well, and faces up to her responsibility, while at the same time facing the evil that is hunting her and those she loves. This girl was fierce! I loved her toughness, and her inner strength, she also knew how to kick butt:). I loved how she and her friend, was able to escape from the Mercesti, by out smarting them with simple household items! I loved how Ms. Thomas shows these young women as strong, capable and brave. (Yes, that’s alot of loves!:)
Ini-herit was hot, hot, hot!! Oh, my goodness, I was grinning from ear to ear as I read. I could not flip through the pages faster, to get to the next scene and then the one after that. I became infuriated when he couldn’t remember, even though he had flashes of memory here and there, but I forgave him quick enough..(who wouldn’t really…jeeze with that face!:O) The love story that was laced through was a perfect! Elder had the perfect, perfect combo of passion and adventure!
Well written, the story flowed smoothly and each scene keeps the reader captivated and fully anchored in the Estilorian world!
Why are you still reading this and not out grabbing a copy of Elder????

It can be so difficult to find well written, morally clean books where the characters are faithful to themselves, their standards and their significant others. Sure these characters have "desires" from time to time (as do all of us), they don't randomly act on those thoughts, the author doesn't go into details and there is definitely no smut.
I strongly encourage this series for those who like strong characters, faithful couples, adventure and just enough suspense to make it interesting. You won't be disappointed and they will leave you wanting to revisit this family over and over again :)
The Daughters of Saraquel were triplets raised as humans and ascended when they were old enough. When ascended, they took over their roles and turned into amazing women who each found their true love. This series continues by following each couple's first born child. Each couple's first born child will go on an adventure that they will not forget. They will learn loss, love, pain, happiness and more. It was a spectacular series. I wouldn't have asked for more since it was perfect. The only thing I would ask is can I have some more? I want to keep reading about how each first born grow up as well as their siblings.
This author is just incredible at creating a world that's brand new and still beautiful even though there's loss, pain, heartbreak mixed with the good things, love, happiness and family. It's on my top 3 series of the year. Perhaps the century. Give it a try and you won't regret it.
my daughter often will bring up and ask me when is Raine releasing a new book :) lolololol
my daughter was around 12 when she started reading her books and was around the time the second book in this trilogy came out and now she is almost 16 and is still hooked on her books big time.
