The bottom line with this item is that it comes with a large re-usable conical mesh (Material) filter, it fits between the top motor bit an the bottom waste collection part. - you need to make sure its fitted along the top of the ash bin and sealed all round when you take it out, this filter is washable.
On first use the cleaner works fine, and collected the ash and debris perfectly, the next part was not as much fun as it needs eptying and the conical filter needs cleaning, this i achieved with a dry paint brush - so plan 2 was to use the bags i had purchased at the same time, the bag slots over the inlet hose inside and the conical filter sits on top of it, this resulted in a lot less mess as the ash is Kept in the bag, altho i think you will get thru a lot of bags! - the bottom line is that it works with and without the bags - but more mess to deal with without, I did read on here that VAX Bags fit it ? - I will resort to my normal cleaning method which is to remove the big stuff and tray - then use the Vac to clean up all the extra stuff, perhaps this defeats the object of having an ash vac, but suits my purpose .
For what I wanted, it's ideal.
The only annoyance is the secondary hepa filter, which has to be properly seated up against a push switch inside the vac. The resistance from the switch gradually pushes the filter off, meaning you have to open the vac and relocate it before every use. Not a deal breaker for me though for £30.
It does get hot but then it would.
