After all those years how could anyone improve "Summer Wine"? By showing how and where it all began. So great to see these familiar characters as young men. And to have Cleggy playing his own father, great. I do wish they'd taken the boys on into the war . . . but that might have been too sad. After you've seen the "Last", see the "First".

There were only two series of 'First of the Summer Wine' which is a pity as there is much promise in an exploration of the well-loved 'Last of the Summer Wine' character's younger years.
This is the second series which brings to a close the short run of an engaging little series which deals with the pre-war friendships and escapades of Cleggy, Compo, Foggy, Ivy, Nora, Wally and friends. You gain an insight into how the characters develop into those we know and love from the 'Last of' series. Some of the acting is superb, with the actor playing a young Foggy getting the mannerisms and speech patterns spot on with the best performance of all in the series. Peter Sallis stars as young Clegg's father in this prequel and it is interesting to see him imbue this character with some of the latter Cleggy's character traits.
Engaging, charming and funny this is a must see for fans of 'Last of' and will engender fondness for it as a series in its own right.

Right on both in the characters and the settings. Excellent story telling and a pleasure to watch. The antics of all seem to fit perfectly with the later characters in the Last of the Summer Wine.Peter Salis is convincing as his own father.I highly recommed this series to all fans of the Last of the Summer Wine

First of the Summer Wine is a divine series and was a brilliant precursor to Last of the Summer Wine. The young actors captured the nuances of the those older actors we all came to know and love in Last of as Compo, Cleggy, Wally, Nora, Seymour, etc. It's a show you can watch again and again over the years, particularly after a bad day in the office, because it makes you laugh and all characters are just wonderful. It's lovely to see the beautiful scenery of the Dales and Moors and hear the gorgeous Yorkshire language as it was and not as all dialects are becoming now, mainly Americanised, the same and dead boring! If you want to watch a show about a time that was simple, gentle and humorous even at a time of great adversity, then this is the one. Well worth the purchase. Enjoy!
