This was an improvement on the last couple of books by the medieval murderers and i'll certainly buy the next one. It's about a play written in the 1100's by a monk that brings bad luck whenever it is performed.I miss micheal Jecks who no longer contributes to the stories but newcomer Karen Maitland is an acceptable replacement.
The basic idea of a book written in 5 parts by different authors has one weakness and it shows in "The First Murder".It can be spoiled if you don't like the writing style or characters of one of the sections and i don't happen to like the characters "Doll Pocket" and "Joe Malinferno" by Ian Morson. This apart it was aan enjoyable read.

Poorly constructed, cardboard characters, predicable plot at every step. Among the most shoddily and carelessly (if at all) copy-edited books I have ever read: plodding style, anachronisms both in concept and in speech register, dreadful cliches at every turn, repetitions and plot holes.
Two stars for a few vaguely amusing incidents and for some snippets of historical information.

This is a ragbag of a book. Each of the authors has attempted a short story on a theme. Regrettably, the stories are banal and lack the twists and turns that make a good detective tale.

None of the authors gives a distinctive voice to any individual characters, and they remain entirely one dimensional. For example, one leading character who is close to term with her pregnancy, yet that aspect appears to have been forgotten. This particular story seems to have been a Western originally. It has been very badly transposed to the Middle Ages with a remorselessly evil 'black hat' toting a pair of crossbows. Really!

Other stories in this book are written with melodramatic flourishes that would be just the thing to entertain the reader who adores Barbara Cartland.

As the jacket says, this is the sort of thing one might pick up at an airport. It is initially distracting to fill a short spell of tedium but is not missed when it is left on the 'plane or the beach.

I love reading medieval history and this certainly fits the bill. It's written by various authors who specialise in this era, and it shows! There are several books by these authors and I'd recommend all of them for anyone who likes history. If you have favourite authors among these I would recommend them 100%. If you like reading historical fiction but are looking for something different I'd recommend this.

An enjoyable read from the authors of "The Medieval Murders" series, number 8, "The First Murder." Tales beginning in 1154 A.D. through 1944 with the Epilogue by Dr. Bernard Knight being "the icing on the cake." I could not wait for a Fall release of this title, so paid the postage to receive it early. It was worth the additional cost!

This is cleverly written with an unusual historical twist and link in its series of investigations. An enjoyable read, was prompted by a selection left by my local library. Highly recommended.

Book was not in as good condition as I'd expected. An ex-library book, it had been well read and the spine was twisted. But fair enough for the money I suppose.
