This little book was used in English Primary Schools during the 1940's and provides a fascinating insight into the way children used to be taught. It begins by explaining and naming the parts pf speech, emphasising that every word in our language is dependent on its use. There are exercises for the child to complete such as putting the correct words into sentences. It continues through group nouns, similes and punctuation. It is also full of useful information such as proverbs, colloquialisms and general knowledge. There are even two pages of traffic signs at the back.
Above all this book was fun! I remember the whole class taking this book into the air raid shelter to use for team quizzes to pass the time until the All Clear sounded.

I used this book as a child and I wanted to give my children the same opportunity. It is remarkable in the sense it provides the basic steps to build a child's confidence in reading and learning. Along with the West Indian Reader series my children are no longer bored with reading. They comment how enjoyable the stories are and how easy it is to learn and have fun at the same time. Any child who finds it a chore to do English could benefit from these books. I wish they used them in schools here or at least recommend them to parents for their child/ren at home.

I found this book addictive as there was so much in it and my friend and I enjoyed testing each other on the numerous general knowledge questions. There is so much content that is so useful for the would be writer like myself. It can only be described as
brilliant and together with the Answers book it is perfect.

I'd definitely recommend the book for certain.

Posting times excellent as always for Amazon.

VERY good book. Used for my daughter 11+ prep. Do not let the sellers fool you into paying more g or the 'original' version. The 'Color' version is exactly the same..

This book is useful for supplementing knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and spelling. It covers the correct use of English including syntax but also some of its peculiarities -eg idioms. With the inclusion of a grammar element within SATs papers, the testing of grammar, punctuation, spelling and context within many multiple choice 11plus papers, I suspect that this book would be useful to parents and teachers alike.

It is a great shame that at the time of writing this review the book which provides answers was proving difficult to source.

Excellent, a mine of English language knowledge, of grammar and its explanations. A book every child/adult should have. My brother had a much earlier version as a schoolboy 50 years ago and there has been a " First aid in English" in the family ever since.

Not as good as the original that's still on my shelf but a great text for use against the more 'challenging' UKs SAT but even this still doesn't cover everything that's on the SPAG test. Good examples and easy for children to follow if they are self studying
