This is an interesting and innovative examination of life in Bible times. It is particularly helpful to readers from non Christian countries who have no idea of the background of the founder of Christianity and the customs and political machinations of the times of Roman occupation. It is well researched and thorough in its detail.

This is great as a background to bible study, an aid to essay writing etc. It is suitable for adults or pupils. I learned a lot of interesting facts from it, and will keep it as a reference book.

HASH(0x92b27840) out of 5 stars Very short 4 Jan. 2015

This "guide" is not very helpful. All the info could be found in any basic history book of the area, which would have more information and would probably be more trustworthy.. The only redeeming parts were the charts and maps. So much of what could have made it a helpful guide (what women wore, how to address different people, where to avoid being cheated, etc.) was not in there. The prose was quite dry. If the author would add more interesting trivia...the bits and pieces of daily lives, what to do if a soldier harassed you, where to buy local clothing and pottery, explain the court system that would happen if you were arrested for something, or the Protocol for having dinner with someone high in power.. it will be interesting to see if there will be a second edition that deals with these issues.

HASH(0x92a0d8ac) out of 5 stars Short interesting travel guide 2 May 2014

This is a concise, practical guide for those planning a trip to Palestine in the year 60 AD. The book covers the basics you would need to know, in a matter-of-fact style that does not betray religious or ethnic preferences. My only complaint is that I wish the author had relegated all citations to endnotes. Several times, just when I had achieved the "willing suspension of disbelief" that enabled me to imagine myself a traveler embarking on the journey he describes, I was jolted back to the present with a parenthetical citation to a modern authority. Still, I enjoyed this book.

HASH(0x92a2aec4) out of 5 stars Interesting but uneven 14 Feb. 2013

It's a neat concept and the very short book starts out like travel guide of sorts. But much of the book feels like random information has been tossed in that wouldn't necessarily help a traveler. Wikipedia is used as a source too often. And it is, again, quite short.

HASH(0x93b53888) out of 5 stars On the go in Roman Palestine 17 Feb. 2014

The author does a great job of synthesizing a tremendous amount of information about the region in the period after the time of Jesus, including such things as transportation, taxes and food. He even covers such traveler's dilemmas as toilets and how to make the most of your time in the towns of the region. Everything is backed by Biblical scripture and the studies of historians and archaeologists. It is a great book for the Bible student, traveller, and writer.

I was more interested in the non-Biblical aspects of this book. I'm always interested in history of which the Roman Empire is inherently of interest like how much was lodging for the night? That being said, this book is an excellent book that bring light to the world of the Bible. It's been extremely well researched.
