Balthazar is willing to lie to Alex to obtain her co-operation, even pretending that he will return her home. They both begin to develop growing feelings for each other, yet how will Alex react when she discovers Balthazar's lies?
Alex proves to be far more resilient that she initially appears, yet she clearly has a history that needs further explanation. There are only hints that she is has abilities that surpass that of a normal human, but she is as left as much in the dark as the reader. The reluctant romance that blooms between Balthazar and Alex works well in an action packed fantasy story line intertwining demonic politics, treachery and magic. I look forward to getting my hands on book 2 "Demons Amongst Us"
The main characters are Lord Demon Balthazar, who's told he needs a human in order to become the anointed Sultan in the wake of the death of his father. And Alexander, a human female with hidden powers, transported to the demon world, who becomes the object of Balthazars desires.
There are a lot of characters in this book and it can get confusing as chapters jump around from scene to scene. One minute you're with Balthazar and Alex, the next with royal conspirators.
The action can get a little bland here and there as it moves between conspiracies and violent clashes, while sparingly sprinkled with luke-warm moments of tenderness between characters.
There seems to be heavily influenced by Indian themes, which makes for a colourful and fragrant story. But the ending comes rather abruptly, in my opinion, however, it does set the scene nicely for the sequel.
It had some good ideas that hopefully the author will develop in the rest of the series, but because I didn't emotionally invest in the characters I won't be reading any further to find out.
I also found this more sci-fi than paranormal at times, again another confused.com moment
If you have the chance to sit down and read this. I defiantly recommend you purchase this book and do. You certainly wont regret it
