Review

'Packham is hugely consistent and if it was possible, I'd pre-order his next novel right now without needing to know anything about it.' --Bookbag - http://www.thebookbag.co.uk/reviews/index.php?title=Firewallers_by_Simon_Packham

'With Jess in year 10, I think this is probably suited to the 12-15 reader and hopefully it emphasises the 'innocent until proven guilty' message that so many people ignore.' --ourbookreviewsonline - http://ourbookreviewsonline.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/firewallers-by-simon-packham.html

'The only books permitted in the young adult section of the Dawdler library are timeless classics like Black Beauty, What Katy Did at School and Swallows and Amazons. But whilst retaining a lingering affection for the leisurely pace and innocence of books where girls called Titty could spend whole summers messing about in boats, I'm glad to be writing at a time when fiction for younger readers is allowed to venture into more controversial territory.' --Simon Packham on Firewallers - http://www.yacontemporary.com/2013/05/guest-post-simon-packham-on-his-new.html

The protagonist, Jess, is a feisty female who finds herself in a tricky situation when her father gets into some mysterious trouble with the police. Her mother takes Jess and her sister to a remote Scottish island full of unusual characters. Forced to live without technology, beauty products, brand names and junk food, Jess' life is turned around and Packham captures the essence of teenage angst with expertise.

The plot is fast-moving with some unexpected twists. I thoroughly enjoyed Firewallers and would highly recommend it.

I loved this book! I read it very quickly when on holiday because I couldn't put it down. I found myself laughing out loud so many times at Jess's description of life that these weird people were living ( on a island with absolutely no WIfi, and thats not even the worst part about this deprived insane lifestyle choice!) . This book covered so many serious issues that everyone will come across in life but still managed to have a nice light-hearted feel to it. As a 15 year old girl there were so many moments in the book where I thought 'Yes I know what you mean!' or "I'm so happy to know that I'm not the only teenage who does this' and you can totally understand why a group of teenagers would absolutely hate living on an island where it is a luxury to spend hours playing in a forest instead of spending hours staring at your laptop screen. Throughout this book I tried to tell myself that there was no way I could be that gadget-obseessed and I could survive without Facebook but just hours after reading this book I found myself ( as I'm sure others who read this book will) doing exactly what the Firewallers did.....A great funny book, loved it. I would recommend to any teenager and is a great book to read even if you're not a super hard reading fan and just read once in a while, it's a book you can still enjoy if you do only read occasionally or if you do read all the time!

Very entertaining, a real adventure for teenage Jess which is packed full of insights into her issues and predicaments. From relationships with her Dad, Mum and her sister (who is also known as "the Golden One"), to the need for technology - mobile phone/facebook/iPod etc.

My favourite bit is where Jess needs to quickly pack some bare essentials for a stay away from home - and has only in room in her luggage for a few basic cosmetics: two types of shampoo and conditioner, anti-frizz serum, foundation, mascara, eye-liner, hair mask, cleanser, toner, hair-straighteners, hair dryer, round brush, regular brush, hairbands hair clips, nail varnish (top coat, bottom coat, three colours and some remover), perfume, deodorant and a packet of wipes. Personally I feel if must have been difficult for Jess to survive with such a basic collection (x). By the way (x) is a special punctuation mark that a friend of Jess invents to denote sarcasm.

A great read for everyone including parents of teenager girls. I recommended this book to my wife on holiday who read it all in one day! A very good holiday read.

Looking forward to the next Simon Packham book.

PS if you liked this book, I think the best of Simon's other books is "comin to get u"
