Possibly the two most well known german ss armor brigades in the last year of the socond world war. Reading it gives the perception of an accountant giving a non emotional report of the brigades performance. A bit collored by the fact that the book was written by a serving member of one of the units. All and any mention of the (documented) attrocities performed by its members in France (on treir retreat to Holland) and in Holland (the stationing of these brigades in Holland were the reason that Opperation Marker garden went sour and thousands of civilians and Paratroopers lost their lives in August and September 1944) are ofcourse missing. It's an undeserved heroes epos, but it also gives quite a bit factual information and good insight in the organisation and routine of these units. True these units fought hard for their Fuhrer but they did this because they believed his reasoning: they were the 'super race' and all other humans were inferior. What this attitude resulted in when placed in a position of absolute control over helpless victims is so obvious and well known that it does not need to be repeated here.
Fine book from the perspective of leaning all of intrest in this episode. But do not forget who wrote it and read other books as well.

This is not a light read and is not suitable for anyone looking for a coffee-table history book. It is though the most comprehensive history of these two elite units ever written. The style may be some what dry but this is more than made up for by the detail of the information given. A must for any serious student of this subject
