About the Author

Julia Gousseva was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. As she grew up, she saw her country go through dramatic social, economic, and political changes in the early 1990's. Her fiction is influenced by her life experiences and her love of Russian fairy-tales (no, the promise of the bright communist future is not one of her favorite fairy-tales -- she prefers happy endings). Julia lives in Arizona with her husband and her son.

Firebird: Adventure One in Adventures of Alex and Katy series, by Julia Gousseva, is an updated fairy tale with modern pacing aimed at kids of every age with short attention spans. I have no children, purposely, but I have been enjoying these quick read fairy tales. Gousseva is a skilled righter, a breath of fresh air these days. In this tale, taken from the Firebird, they find a portal into Firebird's world ( a la Narnia); through it the go, and as darkness falls they meet an old Russian Witch. Russian Witches, as we all know, are dangerous. "We got a little lost," Alex says to Baba Yaga. "And now you may get a little eaten!" Baba Yaga responds . . . And we're off, at breakneck pace, into a perilous adventure. Truly a joy to read, and children will be as mesmerized as adults.

Alex hoped to go with his parents and sister to Russia. That wasn’t part of his parents’ plan; instead, they took off and left Alex and his sister, Katie with their strange Aunt Karina. Neither one of them were happy with that decision. But things soon change as Alex and Katie explore Aunt Karina’s house. Their adventure begins when they find something very unexpected in the library and are transported into a magical world. This is an enjoyable read for children of all ages as well as adults who enjoy a magical journey with fantastical creatures.

A beautiful take on an old fairytale, and it thoroughly captured my attention. This old folk tale has been reworked and sprinkled liberally with a little literary magic to make it burst from the page. So, will Baba Yaga eat the children? It was lots of fun finding out!

If there's one thing I never tire of reading is a good old-fashioned fairy tale. There's something magical about the whimsical, beautiful, and sometimes terrifying nature of Once Upon a Time land. Some of my favorite fairy tales are of Russian origin which often goes overlooked in favor of the Anglo-German ones. But it's always a treat to encounter Russian fairy tales in all their various forms.

Firebird: Adventure One by Julia Gousseva takes the Russian fairy tale and updates it for the modern reader. The story opens with a pair of siblings Katie and Alex whose parents are going away and decides to leave them in the care of their Old Aunt Karina. Not long after their arrival, they discover a magical secret that kicks off their adventures. What follows is a short, but exciting series of events centered around the mythical bird that gives this book its name.

I'm impressed with the way the author interweaves timeless Russian fairy tales and motifs into a children's book that is full of all the delightful goodness that makes a good fairy tale. The story moves quickly and there is never a boring moment in the book. Through its pages new readers will be introduced to the wonderful dark tales of the north, while allowing those familiar with the genre to revisit them.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any kid or grown up who loves fairy tales. Looking forward to reading future installments in this wonderful series.

4 Stars for a fast pace and well-delivered fairy tale adventure.
