This product simply does what it's supposed to do, and does it well. My old Mac mini was connected by a FireWire 400 cable to a Western Digital external hard disk. The replacement Mac mini only supports FireWire 800, so the adaptor was needed to allow the same cable to be used. It could not be easier to fit, and once fitted you can forget it is there: it just works.

Thankfully, the packaging was simple and only required fingers to open.

Any downsides? Well, even though it is a very compact item, it inevitably takes slightly more space (width and depth) than a simple plug. I have not found this to be a problem at all, though.

I've replaced my ancient Apple G5 with a new Mac mini, BUT the external hard drive I have backed everything up on - being older - has a different version of Firewire (400) so I couldn't connect them. Would I lose all my previous stuff?? NO - this little adapter came to the rescue and all is well. Perfect.

I have to say finding one of these adapters was not easy - Apple don't even mention such things, nor do Maplins: in fact this was the only one I found anywhere. And cheap too.

This is a useful item and appears well made and fits well. My only criticism is that if you want to plug in an ordinary cable to another port next to it, e.g. a Firewire 800 cable, that the thickness of the adaptor end can push both connectors apart at a very slight angle from the ports because there isn't any space left between them, which is not ideal. In short, if you will be using a adjacent Firewire 800 port, I would recommend buying a proper firewire adaptor cable to avoid this possibility.

This adapter worked well for me. I purchased a new computer that did not have FireWire 400, which was what I had used previously with my DV camcorder to transfer footage over to the computer. The original cable I have is a FireWire 400 cable, and thankfully with the use of this adapter I can continue to transfer my video footage easily. Recommended for people who wish to still make use of their older FireWire 400 cables.

This little adapter allows me to connect my cameras with my still in good condition premium FW cable (400). So far I haven't noted any loss in speed. The only issue is that in a MacBook Pro 13" it's somehow difficult to insert the adapter into the port if the surrounding ports (Ethernet and Thunderbolt) are in use. That is not intrinsically the adapter's fault. The fix is to first insert the adapter and then either of the other two.
