A good book which gets to the dysfunctional heart of the Trump administration in the style of Vanity Fair
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2018Verified Purchase
Where to start? Wolff has captured well the turmoil of the first year of Trump's presidency. It is essential reading for anyone who already loathes Trump. In a gossipy, salacious and interpretive way Wolff gives you his view of the White House from his inside position on the sofa. Taken at face value it is a portrait of a President and his early coterie of advisors and lackeys, utterly clueless as to how to manage a Presidential win which no-one expected and everyone feared. Wolff does not mince his words and calls out Trump for his excesses of behaviour. Above all its a portrait of a president which should give us all pause for concern and lead us to question why the GOP of Abraham Lincoln should have so cynically embraced Trump to deliver their own agenda. For that Wolff deserves credit.

If you're looking to expose the fiasco of American presidential issues, the sycophantic followers, the self-promoting power grabbers, the incompetent and the able, fighting for Trump's ear, then this book speaks volumes albeit in a manner that largely assumes we 'know' the people involved. At times it takes hard concentration to expose the constant flow of new characters in the plot. Although is may appear critical of Donald Trump, reading easily between the lines I have to admire the exceptional mess he has to wade through in order to bring in new ideas, to create a new 'empire' in office and to effect any sort of change. Draining the swamp, the swamp is very evident in this book, you almost need a nose peg for the stench. Recommended but not an easy read, you need to work at understanding what's on offer here to get the most out of the book.

I am not and never have been a fan of Donald Trump but I am curious to understand his appeal to the American public. I still don’t know but this book does describe the trump factor and the effect of and on those working with him. With that came a glimmer of insight into what the Americans saw.
His instinctive and emotional response to situations often matched those of the casual observer who possibly assumed that behind this there was some additional intelligence that would make it work.
The resulting presidency, according to this account, is somewhat different to the assumptions of those who voted for him.
The account is well written and insightful. There were many people involved both in the Trump election and administration, however many of the names were new to me so at times I got muddled about who was who, but that is my weakness and not the fault of the author.
I feel, in the end, that I know Trump better. He might achieve some things but I will watch this presidency from afar and with interest.

There is no need to repeat what other reviewers have written, but, Michael Wolff could not have made this stuff up! The Trump presidency is one revolving door of madness, incompetence, ego, nepotism, probable corruption, leaks, back stabbing, fuse blowing, hiring and firing and back covering. One has to suspect that this will not end well for Trump and all who are connected with him. There is no knowing either how this is going to end for any of us. Quite frightening stuff really when US policy (and others) seems to be directed following some ranting 3am tweet.
Paradoxically, Steve Bannon however comes out of this book as on occasion the voice of reason and restraint. Scary stuff.

A brilliant, deeply upsetting insight into the Trump administration. As a Brit, I felt like a voyeur snooping into the fascinating world of 'foreign' government. However, these are our closest allies, with whom we are somewhat joined at the hip.......the dysfunction and amateurish White House shenanigans will always ripple out and disrupt our shores....terrifying!. If this is a true reflection of Trumps presidency and only 10% needs to be accurate, then there is no hope for the western world. Trump is portrayed as being an idiot in terms of intellect, a buffoon, a bully, a racist, a misogynist among many other things and he is surrounded by bigger idiots, bullies and self serving 'rich kid's...most of who are his family. A sad, sad day the man was elected as the leader of the free world, even if the whole premise of his running for office was to highlight the deep divisions of both sides of the house. Be careful what you wish for!!!
I would have given 5 stars had it not been for two issues, very poor editing onto kindle and the presumption of the author that everybody reading will know who the minor players are.

Not sure how accurate this is, but even if it's only directionally correct it's very scary. Trump comes out as a narcissist totally out of his depth, thrashing out ar anyone who disagrees with him. The world is not a safe place with him and his lowest common denominator politics in power

It's like sitting in an Upstairs Downstairs servants hall next to a gossipy valet who had served and knew the inner workings of everyone upstairs and has stood in the background as key events occurred. This book does not go out of its way to demonize Trump, it just reflects how he did that for himself. Trump is portrayed with frightening, dispassionate accuracy as a spoiled toddler who has been given a machine gun for Christmas. Behind him are the Whitehouse factions who tried to make things happen, usually for their personal advantage, sometimes in a sheer spirit of anarchy (Steve Bannon). Reading it was finding out what went on behind the news headlines. You could actually live it. The key characters came alive in a way I've never read in a work of non-fiction so that now I can listen to the American media and key figures jump out It was heavy at times because it was peppered with characters, political slang and acronyms but it was well worth perservering
