Fire Woman is the story of how a young woman brought up in rural Wales coped in the testosterone-fuelled world of the fire brigade, where even today 96 per cent of all staff are male.
About the Author
Josephine Reynolds signed up as a trainee firefighter with the Norfolk Fire Service in the summer of 1982. At just seventeen years old, she was the first ever woman to join the fire service full time in the UK. After falling in love with fellow firefighter David Blakeney, an ex-French Foreign Legion fighter, the pair married and headed to the Amazon to continue their adventurous life together.

This was my era, & it really evokes the feeling of early - mid '80s without over dramatizing the issues that faced everyone .
I was fascinated by the story & the trials & tribulations faced by an "ordinary teenager" to achieve something extraordinary.
It isn't always easy reading, some of the anecdotes are, by the very nature of the tale, quite upsetting, but whilst they are not underplayed, it is not unnecessarily graphic (indeed, sometimes more powerful in the understatement).
The author pulls no punches, & is not afraid to show herself in an not all together flattering light in some places, which makes her all the more likeable to me.
This books goes up to when the author is 22, I can't wait to ready the next instalment of this not so ordinary life!
