Seldom has the sum of a band's parts added up to such a prodigous whole. As perfect a record as ever there was. Song writing, arrangements, and production are down to a tee, combined with soul and pure balls, to produce an album which has passed - and will continue to pass - the test of time over generations.
Kirke's drums and Fraser's bass provide the punctuation for Kossoff's wonderfully musical guitar essay (you WILL cry), articulating Paul Rogers' finest hour as a songsmith.
There are no imperfections or seams in this flawless performance - which us arguably the definitive and most complete Blues/Rock album of all time.
It sings, it wails, it screams - and it kick's ass big time.
Kiss your skull goodbye in fact.

Never before, and never since, did Paul Rodger's voice sound as powerful, magnificant, or as goddamn sexy as it does on this album. Kossof's soulful guitar backs it up beautifully, as does the young Andy Fraser's bass.(He was about 17 at the time)Highlights would have to be the intro to 'oh I wept', subtle yet sublime, and the running bass line and guitar effects at the end of Mr. Big. Pure Class. Forget Bad Company, forget The Sharks, and Peace, and don't even mention Paul Rodger's 2000 tour, the real essence of Free was in this album.

A wonderful album which really demonstrated both the power and sensitivity of the band's music. Every track is a masterpiece. 'Don't say you love me' still hits the spot.

At the time of recording, the oldest and youngest member of this band were 21 and 17 (Kirke and Fraser respectively) and yet, the content of this album is so unbelievably mature.

Rodgers, possibly the finest white blues/rock singer of his and many other generations since, with youthful assuredness, sounds like he means every word he sings.

Fraser, (in the main) the other part of the songwriting partnership in Free, plays bass with such a unique style that not only conjoined with Kirke as a superb rhythm section, also had the maturity to play one of the finest bass solos ("Mr. Big") ever put on a long playing record.

Kirke is just such a solid powerhouse drummer that he played a vital part in the overall 'heavy rock/blues style' that was such a part of Free.

Kossoff, at 20 years of age, did indeed play some great solos but, was also one of the pioneers of that dirty loud guitar-style that so many have copied. The beauty of his playing was undoubtedly, as with all the great musicians, 'the gaps' and this also goes for the rest of the band in that there isn't a note wasted, but this was indeed what made Kossoff so good.

Listen to the intro of "Alright Now" played by Kossoff and I defy you not to make some involuntary movement of your head, feet, arms or whatever part of your anatomy you care to move!

(And much to Kossoff's bewilderment, didn't Clapton once ask Kossoff how he got that wonderful tremelo sound out of his Gibson Les Paul?)

All the seven tracks here contribute to the ambience, flow and success of this album, from the opener and title track "Fire And Water", to the the long version of "Alright Now".
