A handsome historical romance set in the period of the Deluge, the time when Poland was beset by enemies and invasions. You do need to have some basic knowledge as to who Hetman Khmelnytsky was, who the Cossacks were, and how the Tartars turn up in Poland. The setting aside the tale is essentially one of true love with the heroine pursued by the obsessive villain, who is in turn pursued by the hero, as all three weave in and out of the action, battle, raid, siefe and a witch(1). The history is not perfect but the armies and effects look excellent. There is a fair dollop of Polish nationalism, much as 1612 is the product of Russian nationalism: British viewers will recognise the sort of thing we find in Sharp and Hornblower.

taking a lot of traditional songs and habits of poland and ukrain (cosacks), mixing it with humor and a love storie, and put a large part of good action in makes it an very agreable movie, a bit long but very entertaning

This is an epic in the true sense of the word that is it has a cast of thousands, a sprawling tale of love, war and intrigue with a healthy smattering of humour for good measure. It starts in an uneasy Poland of 1647 where the peace is a fragile one with neighbouring countries including Russia, the Ukraine and the Tartars. A disgruntled nobleman defects to the Cossacks to induce rebellion thanks to the hapless intervention of a noble lieutenant, the dashing Jan Skrzetuski (Michal Zebrowski). As Jan makes his merry way back to the prince he comes across a damsel in distress the smouldering Izabella Scorupco playing Princess Helena. Well after a few sensuous looks and an impromptu dance they both fall head over heels in love.

But oh dear her matriarchal guardian has promised her hand (and a few other bits) to the conniving Jurko Bohun who will stop at nothing to get her back. Then whispers of war grow ever louder as the Cossacks make their move to invade a besieged Motherland and the clash of nations is all but inevitable.

This is a sumptuous production, actually made in 1999 with no discernable CGI but brilliant battle scenes, sieges, cavalry charges and impaling. It is not a blood fest though as there are so many mini adventures going on in this 175 minutes of a film.

It is really called `Ogniem I Mieczem' (`With fire and sword') and was a four part made for TV production. Just to let you know that not everything is translated but generally the sub titles seem to be very good. However even a minor irritant like that could not stop me ruddy well loving this film, it has everything including heart break and a lot of alcohol consumption, so if a vodka infused historical romp of a film is your thing, you should love this.

This is a brilliant film as the cossacks are waiting to strike Poland on the Eastern border that neighbors the Ukraine, the nearby Tartars and Turks are waiting for the opportunity to attack Europe, and the Polish ruling class is busy feuding among themselves. A daring Pole named Jan Skrzetuski (Michal Zebrowski), meanwhile, is vying for the hand of beautiful Helena Kurcewicz (Izabella Scorupco, best known for her role in the James Bond film Goldeneye), against heavy competition from Ukranian Bohun (Alexandr Domogarov), to whom she is already engaged. Helena's aunt and guardian, however, cancels the wedding plans, and an enraged Bohun attempts to kidnap her. One of Jan's associates, Zagloba (Krysztof Kowalewski), foils the plot and whisks her away to the Castle of Bar, but Bohun is not to be denied; he storms the castle, taking Helena and leaving Jan and his men to find her, just as the Cossacks and the Tartars have joined forces to sack the nation.

I think our dear second reviewer is being a bit harsh. "Winter warrior" has clearly been brought up on modern fare with constant explosions and high octane action, witless dialogue and cardboard cut-out characters. It is our job to educate a generation that are largely deprived of intelligent box-office films. Fire and Sword is indeed a top movie, one of a number of fabulous Jerzy Hoffman epics. Enjoy.
