Product Description

Product Description

A stunning new album from the "celebrated virtuoso partnership" of Máire Ní Chathasaigh, "the greatest Celtic harper of our age" (Live Ireland) and Irish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001, and Chris Newman, "one of the UK's most staggering and influential acoustic guitarists" (fRoots). The aptly-named release is an addictive and stylish cocktail of powerhouse Irish dance-music, gorgeous airs, old songs with a contemporary twist and striking new compositions - with a shot of bluegrass thrown in. From the very first notes of the opening track, the sizzling guitar improvisations and harp pyrotechnics come thick and fast! A perfect showcase for their unique sound. Máire (Irish harp, vocals), Chris (acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins, electric and fretless bass). Guest Musicians: Máire's extraordinary fiddle-playing sister Nollaig Casey, Grammy Award-winning American banjo-player Cathy Fink and drummer/percussionist Roy Whyke. What the critics have said of their previous albums: "Virtuosic, fascinating, dramatic, original, inspired, gloriously adventurous, dazzling, brilliant, stunning, impassioned, electrifying, bewitching, moving, achingly beautiful, influential, revered, unique." - The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Irish Times, The Scotsman, fRoots.

Top Customer Reviews

This album has been reviewed in many places since its release, and it is going to be difficult to add to what has been said elsewhere about it.

Simply, it is a remarkably well produced mix of a huge range of styles - it is impossible to pin this pair to any style for any length of time. You think it's traditional, then some bluegrass emerges, then swing/jazz.

Both musicians are acknowledged as being among the best in their field, and their work together has developed over many years, until their music has become instinctive and seamless. All in all, an album which deserves every superlative which has been used about it.

Maire uses her harp in ways which are virtually unique, her voice is fluid and melodious, and she uses it to great effect on the vocal tracks which are in her native Irish Gaelic. Chris's guitar work is simply amazing. There is also support from other guest musicians, including Nollaig Casey on fiddle and Kathy Fink on banjo, and these contributions complement the headliners' music very effectively.

Highly recommended.
