A contemporary of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, who has outlived them both, Anita O'Day never quite achieved the same level of commercial success, despite being critically acclaimed as one of the few true, great jazz singers. Her voice comes somewhere in between her two rivals, being warm and low in tone, perhaps not quite as powerful (on record, anyway) as Ella, and not quite as soulful as Billie. This is no bad thing; this collection shows that her voice is well matched to a great variety of styles - swing, jazz, blues or ballads, whether accompanied by a full big band or jazz trio (or, on the tender ballad "Travellin' Light", just Barney Kessell on guitar).
Having started out as a dance band singer, she had a great sense of interaction with her backing bands, and this is evident throughout - band and vocalist sound as if they enjoyed themselves. She was also a great exponent of scat singing, and five of the songs feature this to some degree; it's not my cup of meat, but none of them are over-long.
The 18 tracks here are compiled from no less than 15 albums that Anita recorded for Verve between 1954 and 1962; the collection acts both as a "Best of..." and as a sampler, because many of the albums have been reissued on CD in recent years. Arrangers and musicians are out of the top drawer - the likes of Buddy Bregman, Billy May, Oscar Peterson, to name just three - and, considering their age, the recordings sound very good indeed; just the five earliest ones are in mono.
All in all this is a fine introduction to one of the swing/jazz era's best singers; the black cover is not exactly the most eye-catching or attractive, but the music within shines brightly.

`Finest Hour' is indeed just that. A perfect introduction to the wonderful Anita O' Day. 18 tracks of bliss. Blues, swinging tunes and ballads Anita does it all but always in her own highly distinctive and winning fashion. Tracks like `Peel Me a Grape', and `Let Me Off Uptown' have such verve and good humour that they are irresistible. Whereas `God Bless the Child' and `The Ballad of the Sad Young Man' reveal an altogether more tender side to Anita. This is a perfectly balanced collection, showing the lady's interpretive powers and her ability to scat sing. It is plain for instance on tunes like `Sing, Sing Sing' that we are in the presence of a real personality and vocal prowess, capable of fronting the most powerful of big bands without ever really seeming to strain.

I think this set will convince the uninitiated that this collection of two things: that Anita O' Day deserves to be considered in the same breath as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. Secondly that this CD great value though it is,is only a stepping stone to investigating the rest of Anita's back catalogue. My favourite moments? The melancholy album closers `Anita's Blues' and `The Party's Over', just wonderful. Also guitarists should listen out to Herb Ellis's stunning guitar break on `Them There Eyes', brilliant stuff!

This collection apart from boasting great music has interesting sleeve notes, recording notes and good re-mastering.It's a bargain. My advice? Buy.

If you've never given Anita o'Day a try, then this is the perfect introduction to one of the great singers of the 20th century, alot of people will know who ella, sarah vaughan or billie holliay are and sound like, yet when you mention Anita you're likely to get a blank stare. Anita deserves and should be mentioned with all of the above, she was a great singer, had a totally distinctive voice, swung with the best of them and looked fantastic, if you've never seen it watch Jazz on a Summer's Day she steals the show. On this cd you get to hear some of the best versions of jazz standards recorded, believe me you won't regret buying this and once you've heard her, you'll want to hear more.
