The book is well written although there is a sense that it was written in a hurry. I found the beginning chapters a little confusing as the flashbacks were too many too soon. Apart from that a good read and improved a lot in then final half.

I used to be the typical young girl who adored horses, had ponies to ride and loved reading ‘Follyfoot’ so this book immediately struck a chord with me.

Based around a livery/stable and horse competing business that April runs with her best friend Max. It took me a while to get into this book because it jumps back and forth in time rather rapidly but stick with it to get the back story of the main characters.

As we follow April through time she has challenges from family, friends and an ex all determined to undermine her role in the business. They all have reasons for their behaviour and April is torn between choosing love, family or business .. it’s quite a torrid ride and not a journey for the faint hearted. There are some steamy sex scenes.

AJ the ex is objectionable and I could not understand what April saw in him … Max is gorgeous but has a chequered past and nobody thinks he is good enough for April .. she finds herself caught in the middle of the warring pair. A good solid read, plenty of animals, rolling countryside and incidents well described to make the reader feel a part of it.

Thanks to the author and Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.

A gripping story once you get used to the jumping around in time. A little bit of every emotion and enough twists to make you want to see it through to the end.

HASH(0x9d88af84) out of 5 stars An enjoyable and interesting novel!! 17 May 2015
By (ajk) avid reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
"The Final Straight," was a fun and interesting read. April works for and partly owns a part of her best friends stables. She is doing whatever she can to ensure it continues to thrive as he is often letting things slide. Throughout the novel, we learn more about April and Max's relationship, as well as her past with a man named A.J., and the reason April is no longer allowed to show her horses.

Throughout the novel her father and her ex both do their best to make Max's stables obsolete through multiple means, putting April in numerous compromising situations with her best friend and the man she loves, as vs AJ and her father.

The author also brings into play many other social issues of importance today including family relationships, head and body trauma, infidelity, trust, and battered women.

Charlotte Howard covers a lot of ground in this novel. It is well written and understandable, despite the topics particularly pertaining to the attempted take over of George's stables and how that all works. Her character development is top notch and the reader is able to relate to each of them.

Despite devious plans by numerous people, April is able to come out of the whole situation having what she most wants out of life in the end. Something she never thought would happen or would be possible.

Mystery, romance, and women's literature, are all covered in "The Final Straight." It is a novel that I found enjoyable and held my attention throughout, particularly due to the manner in which the novel was written and the multiple genres the author covers.

Definitely recommend this novel for anyone who likes suspense, romance and a little bit of everything else. And of course, those who love horses and stables...

HASH(0x9d88afd8) out of 5 stars Action packed read.... 20 Aug. 2015

This was a really good read. It follows April a woman caught between two men and a family business. She has to choose between loyalty and friendship or money and family.

This book was filled with action, animals, romance, and so many other things. I really enjoyed it. I was really rooting for April and Max even though at times they both made me mad. Im glad it ended the way it did.

This book is written very well and is a good read for people who love a good action packed book. I would definitely recommend this to other readers....Stormi

HASH(0x9dc3f27c) out of 5 stars Great romance read 23 Mar. 2016
By feedmeinbooks - Published on Amazon.com

I have to admit I truly enjoyed every minute of this book. Growing up I always loved reading “horse books” as I called them. I guess that’s part of growing up southern. And the author aimed to please that southern part of my soul.

The plot was beautifully thought out and put on paper and the characters, while not perfect, made me smile and laugh throughout. (Even at those times I wanted to shake them). I love when authors write in a strong female character. Any woman who can work in the stables, is a strong willed woman. (Trust me I know). To top that off April is stuck between two men.

There were times when the flashbacks would give me whiplash, and there are a lot of them, but they are actually needed to understand most of the feelings from April and to help understand her decision at the end. And I have to say I was team Mat throughout. ;)

I recommend this book to any reader who loves romance. It is such a great read.

Enjoy!

HASH(0x9dc3f4bc) out of 5 stars A fun complex story 24 Mar. 2016
By Floryie - Published on Amazon.com

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I will be honest. I picked up this book because it has my favourite best friends to lovers theme. But the book turned out to be more than that.

It was quite an enjoyable read. It was a fast read and I literally flew through the pages. Though it is primarily a romance, it has so many themes too. It deals with friendship, abuse and loyalty. The characters were well developed and they were realistic with flaws and cracks in their personalities. I loved April and Max as both individuals and a couple.

The story was complex and it appealed to my cross genre loving self. The only part which kind of confused me was the backstories of the protagonists which was told in time jumps. Other than that I had fun reading this tale.

My rating : 4/5
