This game. The story, the pacing, the gameplay, the music, my god. Everything comes together so well, and the story, the world it is set in, is incredible. The characterization is done extremely well, and the voice actors are at top form. It took a long while to create this game, but it was damn worth it. One thing to note, while the battle system is complex and very rewarding if I might add, the game will guide you through it.

Enjoy this masterpiece!

Graphics: Very good.

Story: Very good.

Characters: Good.

Combat: Below average (spamming A over and over isn't that interesting)

Free-roaming: Terrible (it's often a one way street)

I didn't finish the game, fans of the series will no doubt love it. Otherwise, it's average.

People accuse this game of 2 things, first it’s to linear and second its battle system can be simple button mashing.
I have played loads of games that are far more open world than this will ever be, but cannot hold a candle to the:
Strong engaging story line.
Graphics working flat out.
Beautiful diverse environments.
Characters you actually care about.

As for the battle system its simplicity is its strength, because you can make the game as shallow or as deep as you want, if they make the battle system too hard people complain, if the they make it too easy people say it’s a waste of time, so they have given you the choice.

For years all ff fans have enjoyed a genre that had a simple and good recipe but square enix need to branch out to continue to compete in the market, this game isn't perfect by any measure however it shows and interesting perspective on the possible future of the greatest series of games ever.

I consider myself a big final fantasy fan and as such I was really excited about this offering. However the more time I put into this game the more disenfranchised I found myself becoming. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly linear this game is. For the first 30 hours you will be running along on one fixed path. Until you reach disc 3 there is no chance to explore or venture off the beaten track. Not that you would want to anyway; as this game has done away with any sort of town or city. Instead you purchase items off the save point. There are no other characters to interact with or minigames to play. For me, exploring new towns and kitting out my team was a big thing in final fantasy. Now that it has been abolished the game holds my interest less.

The battle system has been revamped in such a way that reduces the players interaction. Most battles consist of hammering the autobattle button and occasionally changing your classes to incorporate a healer when your HP gets a bit low. I can see what they were trying to do with this new battle system (ie speed things up) but by taking control out of the player's hands the game might as well be playing itself.

The story is what you'd expect from final fantasy, completely overblown and containing more angst that your average My Chemical Romance concert.

All in all I felt that I gave this game a good chance (I've clocked up 35hrs or so) but it has let itself down spectacularly. I hope that the next final fantasy goes back to the older style of game design but seeing that the next final fantasy will be FFXIII - 2, a direct sequel, I do not hold out much hope.

This is without question the worst video game I have EVER played, and I have played a lot of video games. It's just appalling. There are enormous stretches of the game where there is absolutely no requirement for the player to do anything, the combat is intensely repetitive, the writing is awful and the plot is non-existent. There is just nothing fun or compelling or interesting about it. The only emotional response I have to offer in response to it is sheer anger that I squandered any of my life playing it (and be warned: it is a VERY, VERY long game, so that boredom won't go away if you take the foolish step of sticking it out).

Please don't buy this game. Publishers can't push stuff like this and expect us to swallow it. Final Fantasy hasn't evolved in years. Play the old games, if you must, but in the name of all that is good in this world just keep your money in your pocket.
