... that sheds new light on one of the cinema's greatest and most enigmatic directors

This is an outstanding documentary that sheds new light on one of the cinema's greatest and most enigmatic directors. It's a matter of debate whether Leon Vitali emerges as a hero or a victim, sad or triumphant. Probably all of the above. He clearly worked beyond any reasonable call of duty in a way that rather reminded me of peasant life in Burma which I visited 20 years ago. There was no mechanisation so everything was done by hand. Similarly, Leon Vitali makes endless notes on everything and goes to extreme lengths to solve minuscule problems. Did it really matter what print quality was like for a revival in Hungary?

For this documentary there are some notable interviews - Ryan O'Neal, for instance, as well as Kubrick associates and Warner Bros executives. For me, there are two notable absentees. If Leon was such a devoted slave to Stanley, I would have expected interviews with Jan Harlan (brother-in-law) and Mrs Kubrick herself. And would not those two people have noticed the physical ravages that Leon was suffering, and the workload which surely broke every employment law in existence. Would not they have said to Stanley, 'Have you see Leon lately? He looks like near death. You need to give him a break, a holiday, get him an assistant.' Or something like that.

Stanley may have been some sort of genius. He may also have been a monster. Perhaps you can't have one without the other.

Enjoyable documentary

As soon as I heard this documentary was coming out I wanted to see it, so happy it was available online the same time as the cinema release (not shown locally). Long time Kubrick fan, but although I was aware of Leon Vitali I didn't know the extent of his role in Kubrick's life and work. He was and remains a true devotee. Quite quick moving and packed full of interest I will be watching again.

More than Stanley’s assistant.

Really insightful account of Leon and the essential role he played in Stanley’s work. I worked for Rank Labs and saw the search for perfection first hand, this is an amazing film and I hope that history will properly record the work that Leon did for 30 years for Kubrick.
Really enjoyed this and great to see some old colleagues in notes and in person.

Imagine working for the most intense filmmaker in history; whilst also assisting every other department within the firm. Incredible. What a guy. The fact he is on hard times now; really adds to the drama. What a guy

Great documentary on the unsung hero in Kubrick's universe.

Does justice to the man who gave up a promising life in acting to be Kubrick's right-hand man, and the true unsung hero of his universe.
