Recorded at Abbey Road, The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith is conducted by the composer himself. The disc's programme is similar to those given by Goldsmith at his regular London concerts. Things get off to a disappointing start with Star Trek: The Motion Picture, momentary pauses/fades robbing the piece of its original exuberant glory. This is followed by an 18-minute medley which clumsily patches together themes from seven very different scores, the disparate styles of Chinatown, Air force One and Poltergeist failing to gel, while a rushed rendition of Papillion bludgeons one of Goldsmith's most haunting melodies. Far stronger are the suites from The Boys from Brazil and The Twilight Zone: the Movie, and the brisk TV themes medley has a couple of rarities to fill gaps in almost any collection. The Russia House and Rudy provide other highlights, but too often the arrangements and the devotion to short themes over more substantial suites results in a superficial treatment of some of the composer's best work. If you are only going to have one Jerry Goldsmith anthology, The Omen: The Essential Jerry Goldsmith Film Music Collection is a far more rewarding choice. --Gary S Dalkin
