The nine seasons come in m-lock cases which each season containing 6 discs (season 2 has 7 discs). They are housed in a sturdy outer box with the classic Mulder/Scully walking imagery which has become common place over most of the releases and each season contains imagery which is relevant to the season. There is an additional space which could be used for the revival series or for the feature films (available separately on Blu-Ray in directors cut formats). Two issues with the packaging, firstly space, namely should the revival series spawn a second run you're not gonna have any space left for the Blu-Ray release, so you will either have to abandon the outer box, keep it separately, or for some buy a re-release of the boxset (a la James Bond) that includes the new series and more space. The second is the lack of a booklet per season with information about the episodes. The closest you have it the episode list on the reverse of the case cover, of which you have to remove a Blu-Ray and due to the dark cover and blue m-lock case makes reading a bit of an issue on certain light conditions.
As the series was only made in the 90's audio and picture quality are more than decent on the whole, in fact I was surprised by the quality on most episodes. For the release they have gone back to the negatives which has allowed a proper widescreen ratio to be applied to the disc's, as the first few series were in 4:3 ratio as per the standard back then. A few episodes show a bit of fuzziness in certain scenes and there is some grain in the blacks but this appears to be due to degrading of film elements for those scenes, of which they have been mastered as good as they could.
The previous DVD release features have been ported to this set in HD.
On the whole a superb release, yes a few niggles but everyone will have there own. If only other cult/classic series got this sort of treatment on Blu-Ray!!!
I first bought the feature length videos when released then DVD set which i am still proud to have kept and now i own the Blu ray set!
Enough about the show as that will never disappoint, so onto the quality and the good points and the bad points
Flip type boxes on the U.K set, plus there isn't a detailed episode information booklet inside like on the DVD set just an episode guide inside the box on the reverse of the front cover underneath disc 1
Picture Quality 9-10
98% of the time it's excellent but picture quality does switch to SD in mainly short outside shots and when two people are talking it will switch to SD on one person then then back to HD on the other, it is worse on the first season and does improve as the seasons progress's
What also is a big improvement is that it is displayed in 16.9 Full frame rather than 4.3 how it should be it is like watching a brand new show shot today.
Sound Quality 10-10
Excellent now in 5.1 DTS-HD great when playing through a surround sound system you get to hear more of the musical score which before was in the background plus all the background noises when M&S are creeping around a dark building or in the woods at night somewhere.
Extras as far as i am aware all the special features like the Interviews with Chris Carter,TV Spots, and the documentaries 'Secret of the X Files' that were on the DVD set are all there on the Blu ray but mainly in SD
So for a show first filmed back in the early 1990s this Blu ray is excellent but not perfect but if you are a fan it is a must buy and definitely worth the upgrade from DVD and at £99 that is about £11 per season!
The show follows the investigations FBI agents Mulder and Skully. Mulder an avid believer in extra terrestrials and runs the X Files operated by the FBI, A department that investigates the strange and unsual. Scully is assigned to assess Mulder and the X Files to try disband them. She and Mulder set out investigating a series of strange and abnormal cases.
The boxset contains all 9 seasons and the 2 movies over 55 discs. each disc contains around 4 episodes. There are special features including deleted scenes and commentary. The dvds are very high quality and the picture and sound is great, with this being a 90s show the introduction of a blu ray version would not really improve the picture anymore.
The episode discs come in 3 boxes and are easy to follow in order. The only downside is there is no indicator to say when to watch the movies.
For those who would like to know, movie 1 "fight the future" is set right after season 5 and movie 2 "I want to believe" is set after season 9.
Rewatching these shows is honestly fantastic. As a child I missed most of Mulders wit and humour. The narrative continuing story of Mulders sister and the black goo over almost all 9 seasons is just fantastic and keeps you watching,
I recommend this boxset to any fan.
