Product Description

From the Author

Essential FileMaker facts--without a billion pages of hype
If you just want to get to work, this is the FileMaker book for you. It's task oriented with hundreds of screen shots and loads of real-world tips presented in a straightforward manner. •Aimed at the beginner and intermediate user, it walks you through how to publish what FM calls "instant" databases for the Web--without writing HTML code. It also will get you started on creating a customized Web database using FM's CDML tags. •There's plenty of clear help on using templates and scripts to speed and simplify your database design. •The book's cross-platform format helps Mac _and_ Windows users learn how to seamlessly share files across platforms, networks and the Internet. •And it has what so many computer books lack--a really good index where you can find page refs for anything you might need (even if you don't know FM jargon) and a complete set of appendices for keyboard shortcuts, scripting commands, and formula functions. •If you're an expert user! ! or a database pro, check out Maria Langer's book (Database Publishing on the Web). For everyone else, this Visual QuickStart is a painless way to get going.

From the Back Cover

FileMaker Pro 4 for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide is a task-oriented tool for mastering one of the most popular database programs. Claris's powerful package allows users--from individuals to corporate work groups and small businesses--to have convenient, cost-effective access to databases. Version 4 of FileMaker Pro answers the widest range of database needs--from transforming Microsoft Excel spreadsheets into databases in just seconds to operating a retail business on the Web using built-in CGI tools. And its enhanced Send Mail feature makes mass and bulk mailings of e-mail simple.

This guide serves both as a tutorial to FileMaker Pro 4 and, for more experienced users, as and easy-access reference. Macintosh, Windows, and Windows NT users will all benefit from this guide's easy approach to learning.

Format: Paperback
I bought this book hoping to get a good tutorial on scripting and portals. However it is mostly made up of screen shots of the most obvious Filemaker operations. You will save your self money if you simply browse through Filemaker's on line help. This book is really for a person coming new to databases. If you are familiar with constructing a database and want to go on to build more complex databases then this book is not for you

Format: Paperback
Like every Visual Quick Start Guide I have bought in the past, this one is clear and it contains numerous screen shots which help understand the basics and more advanced functions of FMPro 4. It's covering of CDML and scripting is obviously better and clearer than that found in the FMPro official tutorial, however I wish there were a Visual Quick Guide entirely targeted to more advanced users who currently are craving for similarly clear explanation on these two subjects. Still, this guide will get you started in no time. I give it 5 crowns because it did very well what I expected it to do. Very highly recommended if like myself, you are a new user of this cool database. And it's cheap too!...

This is one of the easiest Filemaker Pro 4.0 books I have used. It is very easy to follow and allows you to ease into several features which were difficult to understand in other similar books on this subject.
