Loud but wonderful

As a touch-typist I was looking for a mechanical keyboard to replace my wireless membrane Logitech. After a bit of research I learned that the best mechanical keyboards use Cherry MX keys of varying colour. The best colour for pure typists is Cherry MX blue. These feel fantastic and give great feedback (so that you know you've hit each key without even looking at the keyboard). However, they are *very* loud, so you may want to consider buying a quieter colour (e.g. red) if you live with people who might find loud clacking somewhat irritating.

Once I'd decided on Cherry MX blue keys, the next question was whether to go for a gaming or plain keyboard. I really wanted a gaming keyboard so that I could use the media keys to eject disks and access e-mail, calculator, etc. at the touch of a button. However, I couldn't find a gaming keyboard that I liked - they all seemed to have outlandish extras to make them look flash, but reduced their practicality (e.g. glossy fingerprint-magnet finishes, absurd angles and illuminations). So in the end I went for this classic Filco majestouch-2 keyboard.

I do miss the media keys a little, but overall this is a marvellous keyboard and it's a joy to type on it. It is beautifully weighted and engineered and I'm sure my typing speed and accuracy have improved.

In summary:

Pros
* Touch-typing on this keyboard is hugely satisfying and enjoyable
* There is an option to use a classic keyboard connector (not USB), which allows you to press huge combinations of keys at the same time (useful for gaming, apparently) - known as 'N-key rollover' or NKR for short. Of course, you can still plug it into a USB port if you like.

Cons
* The keys emit a very loud clacking noise - great fun for the typist, but might annoy other people nearby.
* No media keys (although there is a Windows key and the usual function keys)
* It's pricey (although in my opinion the high quality easily justifies the price)

Hope this helps. In a nutshell, if you do a lot of typing...buy this keyboard!

I've used this keyboard all day every day for about two years and it is just a perfect keyboard for me. The keys are smooth and light to type on, and make a loud click to tell me I've pressed a key. (I am not a touch typist). It has a quite heavy base and seems robust and very well made. I'd expect it to last forever (well 10 years).

Not much else I can say about a product that looks like every other keyboard, and does the exact same job as other keyboards. It does cost about ten times the price of other keyboards I own, and colleagues say they would hate it because of the clicky noise (quieter versions of the same keyboard are available that use different microswitches under the keys). But this is a tool I spend a lot of time using and it is exactly what I want.

As I type this review, on the bench next to me I also have a 25 year old "clicky" keyboard (originally from an IBM XT PC) which I still use and like. The Filco Majestouch-2, NKR, Click Action Keyboard is what I bought, trying to find something similar. It is similar and better.

Seriously nice keyboard. Heavy yet compact and fantastic cherry key switches which are a real pleasure to type on. One thing you need to be aware of though is that this keyboard is loud, so it may not be suitable if you share an office with others. It might just be me, but I've noticed that I tend to make less mistakes such as typing "teh" instead of "the" with this keyboard (which is a bonus). There is one minor change that I'd make if I was to redesign this board and that's to allow the cable to be routed to the left of the right of the board instead of its current fixed position in the centre. That being said I highly recommend this keyboard, so much in fact that I've just ordered a second to use with my windows machine. Nice (just enough) packaging and quick delivery by The Keyboard Company too.

This keyboard is worth every penny. It's very heavy which means reassuring build quality and it won't move a millimetre during use (the excellent rubber feet also help).

I'm so glad I got this one and not any of the other similarly priced mechanical keyboards, it's as large as it needs to be without any excess plastic or unnecessary 'design' around the edges.

It's nowhere near as loud as people make out, my scissor key 'SILENT' keyboard was not much quieter. Put it this way, my girlfriend is sitting on the desk next to me and she's not complained once about the noise.

Took a bit of getting used to but that's to be expected, considering the difference to the keyboard I was using previously.

I was anxious paying so much for what looks like a very standard keyboard given that there are really fancy keyboards for less. However, this is anything but a standard keyboard!

Its very heavy and very firm, nothing like its standard 'Plastic Fantastic' cousins. It feels like you could beat someone to death with it and immediately email your friends to tell them what happened! (Dont beat someone to death with it though... you can't have a computer in prison!)

It is quite loud while typing due to the Blue Cherry switches but this is my personal preference. It just feels & sounds great.

Definitely recommend this!
I'll never be able to go back to standard keyboards again!

I have had this keyboard for over 2 years now and I am very pleased with it. The key action and sound gives you great feedback when typing. The build is very robust, it is a solid board with no flex.
