This unobtrusive little DAC does a fine job in providing quality audio from a Virgin V+ or TiVo box with a TOSlink optical cable as input and an RCA-RCA cable to your amplifier. The unit comes with a 5V power supply but if you have a spare USB-miniUSB cable it's preferable to power the DAC from the V+ box (they are only ever switched on together & a mains outlet is saved).

Purchases from AV Shop. Description says FiiO D3 with WM8805, instead FiiO D03K Taishan with CS8416 is delivered.
WM8805: jitter 50ps
CS8416: jitter 200ps

While layout probably plays a bigger role then chip, the description explicitly says WM8805 and you'll get the inferior CS8416 chip.
I'd purchase it from a vendor who is honest.

Setting this aside the product seems well build, metal enclosure is nice in this price range. However there are a couple of <30 quid dacs which feature the same chip and will most likely produce similar results.

Connected out of my Virgin box, using a 9 foot toslink optical cable, into my old analogue surround amplifier. It's given it a new lease of life, sounds better than ever. The unit is tiny and does come with a power supply. This has to be the best value DAC yet.

Best priced dac around, twenty quid is pretty good. Sound is good going through some creative t4os attached to an LG plasma. Had initial thoughts as other buyer regarding break in period because sounded flat at first, but now fine. Worth the money.

The converter is perfect for connect Optical sources to older devices with RCA or 3,5 Jack (You need a special cable)input.

I ordered this because I have Virgin HD box and there is only optical audio output on it and my old old 5.1 audio system only can handle Stereo RCA or Jack input. So this converter is the perfect solution.
The converter is so small, smaller than a credit card and about 1 cm thick. So you can hide away easily. It is came with it's DC power adapter and a really clear user manual. (other cables not included)

What I did: I connected the converter with an optical cable to the set-top-box and on the other side I connected the converter to my audio system with RCA cable.

Works perfectly, good quality and crisp sound on my speaker system. The converter convert the digital signals into left and right analogue signals. So my speaker system can make 5.1 sound from these.

I would recommend to anybody.

So I've been using my macbook pro and Spotify for my music needs for a while now. I have some old Lowther speakers, with new drive units, and a Pioneer SA 9800 amp... Quite a system for the right kind of music... I had been having trouble with the output for certain things, particularly piano music, there was this strange resonance with certain notes and it always sounded quite harsh, almost unbearably wrong in your ear. At first I attributed this to the speakers' drive units... was I wrong :F. Then I had the amplifier serviced, there were problems with that but they did not change the sound, I noticed that the harshness and resonance was coming no matter the digital source (analog vinyl excluded) so in disbelief I decided it was time to see if a DAC would make a difference. I did not want to spend a lot of money at that stage. After some research I decided of all the really cheap DACs out there, the FiiO D3 was damn good, 24bit 192 kbps, an SNR >= 95 db which although not good enough to match my speakers sensitivity or amps figures it was still very reasonable, standard frequency response 20Hz-20kHZ, low harmonic distortion (THD~0.01) and metal casing (to screen electromagnetic interference {most similar products are plastic cased}). N.B. As far as I'm aware CYP don't publish technical data for their cheaper products.

All I can really say in the end is that its awesome, all of the problems I was having with the analog output from the macbook pro were gone. Although the improvement was well worth the small investment in a ÂŁ6.99 mini-toslink to toslink cable and the ÂŁ25.99 DAC itself, some of the sweetness has left the music. I guess you can't complain for ÂŁ25.

I got this along with a toslink cable to eliminate noise from my PC's
line out on its onboard sound card. First time I played music though
this the sound was actually dreadful, really bad distortion, a high
pitch whining noise and one channel louder than the other - so I
started to think about returning it and giving it a bad review. But
after about 5 minutes it seems to have 'broken in' and all those
problems disappeared, the sound quality is basically perfect now.

Looked at the other reviews, and that made me buy but with some worry about the power supply issue and having to reboot it. Happy to say that wasnt an issue, It was said that it would work better with a USB connection which I thought my LCD LG didnt have as such. What it did have by way of a USB was the "Service Only" USB, This thankfully was just like a USB2 connection that provided power to the unit when I turned on the Tv and off when the TV was off, Cool! I thought the Tv may have an issue with it's USB being used for something other than service but I needn't have worried. So if that's the only type of USB you have on the back of your Tv, that will work fine dont worry.Obviously you will have to fine another USB cable to do this.
Was pleasantly surprised to find that now im running the sound through the Surround Sound Speakers correctly I have had to turn the sound down on the unit to 9 or 10 as it was at 30 and I nearly blew myself through the wall when I tested it!. Previously, it was run out of the Tv headphone port to the Surround Sound. Bought new L+R cable and new Optical(Toslink) cable at same time, had switch wrong way round first time on DAC but checked again flicked the switch and blew myself away!. Apparently your Tv must have an option for PCM Output in the menu somewhere for this unit to work. I did find it (Eventually), and it turned out I had always had it selected.
Clear and concise sound no bass rumble distorting the higher range now, can hear everything. Dont be dissapointed that all 5 of your Surround Speakers dont work, it can't do 5.1 just the front 3 and Bass box. Thats fine by me, save the Surround Sound for movies, makes it that bit more special. :)
