Figure Eight by Calia Read
3.5 stars!!!

“Well, your nest is getting ready to fall. So it’s either fall or fly. Little bird that I love the most, what are you going to do?”

As ever, Calia Read’s writing was impeccable, this author never fails to draw me into a story and hold me captive for its entirety. Calia Read’s words are like poetry, where you feel the timbre, the resonance and are lulled into the melody the more you read. That has not changed.

“You seem to forget that I’m your figure eight. Your infinity. You try to run but I will always find you.”

I really cannot go into details about this book, because everything is a spoiler. When a book is all about the suspense, intrigue and build up, the author spends a remarkable amount of time and effort to bring you to that precipice. That feeling of balancing on the edge of a cliff and you are impatiently waiting for the author to give you that final nudge over. This was how I felt throughout this whole book. I was waiting for that push, that nudge, but all I felt was a whisper.

“DIDN’T I TELL you that there’s a dark side to love? Well, you’re getting ready to experience that and you don’t even realize it. Yet.”

Calia Read delivers a book that confuses you, it infuriates you, it has your brain running a mile a minute frantically trying to decipher what the hell is going on. You will find yourself going back over things, dissecting every little morsel, replaying, analysing and after all that spent energy you will still be no closer to understanding what the hell is going on. For that, I applaud the author, she had me hoodwinked from the very start.

I've been in the mind of this author before and its a screwed up place! Couldn't wait to get back in there!!! But oh jeez. Wow.

This book. I'm having trouble trying to write this! My thoughts are everywhere!

I had no idea where this was going!

As I was reading, the theories were flying around in my head...I thought I had it and BAM, another curveball thrown at me!

Not saying anymore than that. Wow you have to read this. But I advise not to read before going to bed cause I couldn't sleep thinking about it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind. Blown! 20 April 2017
By Iza M - Published on Amazon.com

As crazy as this sounds, but it was just what I didn't know I needed! The cover and the blurb made me buy the book, but I kept putting it off because of said blurb.

I'm not one to read non-romance all that often, nowadays. But this was just... wow!

With multiple POVs, this story will take one a wild ride. Twists and turns you don't see coming, making you bite your nails and sit on the edge of your seat because what. Is. Happening?!

This book was so addicting, I didn't want to put it down. I couldn't. Even at work, I sneaked in some reading because these characters were on my mind.

I love how I questioned everything about this story, I was suspicious of everything and everyone, couldn't trust anything. I had my hunches and some were spot on. It all comes together toward the end, the last piece of the puzzle is added and voila!

Biggest a-ha! moment of my life, I'm telling you.

Needless to say, I loved it and this was my first CR book, but not my last. 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missed Opportunity by the Author 24 Mar. 2017
By Book reader - Published on Amazon.com

While I've loved and devoured other books by Calia Read, and somewhat knew what to expect by her dark and twisty writing style, this one left me reeling.

The execution and writing style were brilliant (outside of the handfuls of grammatical errors sprinkled throughout). The seamless yet purposefully deceptive writing drags you in and pulls you under, until you're drowning with the characters. I found myself lost in Selah's mind, fighting to swim to the surface right along with her.

I loved every minute of this mind-bending read...until the very last sentence of the epilogue. "Some people are just not meant for this world."

I do not need an HEA to love a book, nor does having a character die ruin a book for me. Life isn't all sunshine and roses. Life is hard—it sucks at times. For many, day-to-day life is torture. But to justify suicide without some sort of PSA on suicide awareness is just plain irresponsible of the author.

Not to mention this horrifying statement: "Because what people don’t understand is that drugs are just a band-aid placed over agony. They may hide it and a lot of times, numb it. But at the end of the day the agony’s still there. Still waiting for you." While I understand that might be coming from Selah's mind, it's ethically wrong, in my opinion.

There may be some vulnerable people who are extremely sensitive and reactive to what they read. If someone with major depression read this, or other mental illnesses reading this book, I'd hate to for them to think that this ending is the only way out.

This was a MAJOR missed opportunity for this author to reach people in need of help. Again, as stated, there was NOT a PSA on suicide awareness following this book.

***So I'll take the opportunity to add this here***:
Suicidal thoughts and behavior are common among people with mental illness. If you or a loved one have thoughts of hurting yourself, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately, go to an emergency room, or confide in a trusted relative or friend. Or call a suicide hotline number — in the United States, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).
5.0 out of 5 stars It all circles back 29 May 2017

This book was amazing. Each page gripped me as I wandered into Selehas life wondering and asking the same questions as her. each chapter of the mysterious stalker had me ending to know who knew her so well, yet stayed so far away. Just when you think you know the story, a huge twist smacks you in the face and you hope for the best and then the biggest twist of all ends the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I went in blind..... 21 Mar. 2017

And I'm glad I did. This isn't like Unravel or Unhinge. It's complicated to follow, but naturally comes together. It's truth, it's real. This woman is a brilliant writer. I'm still a little bit in shock. Ok...alot. 5 complex stars, no doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars An experience like no other. Utterly addicting as usual! 14 Mar. 2017

Wow. I honestly don't even know where to start. Calia Read has once again messed with my mind, making it work extra hard at trying (at times hopelessly) to figure out where this story would take me. I swear I had no clue who or what Figure Eight was throughout the majority of this book. I didn't fully comprehend who was narrating each chapter. I went back in forth as to whether or not I was truly understanding what I was reading. And yet, here I sit, utterly thrilled that I got to experience another one of the author's tall tales and completely in awe of her talent.

This is one of those books you have to experience for yourself. Although I was lost most of the time, when Calia Read finally brings you to the 'a-ha' moment towards the end, it all magically makes sense! There is a huge sense of relief that you as the reader aren't slowing losing your mind, which seemed to be what might be happening to Selah. All the supporting characters clearly have their place in this story and it's like following a trail of crumbs that they lay out haphazardly in order to both bring you to a somewhat satisfying conclusion and drive you crazy along the way.

It's a story that kept me both riveted and consumed with trying to figure out right along with Selah what exactly her life meant. It was almost like watching a car wreck in slow motion knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it.

I can't help but be vague in this review because there is no way to fully explain Figure Eight without giving too much away.

When you need to screw up your brain in the very best way, grab one of the author's books. You will be mesmerized by her words and filled with the most incredible wonder. I do believe she is a genius. Her way with words is just outstanding.

A huge 5 stars!
