Oh my gosh, where do I begin? This book is an absolute must read. It'll have you laughing and crying and it'll grip you from the first page to the last.

Ryan and Jake have been friends since 5th grade, when Jake and his sister Finlay moved to Fremantle from Sydney. There was an instant friendship between the boys, one that would carry them through life as brothers.

Ryan had problems with his home life, and found himself spending more and more time at Jake's house, slowly becoming a member of his family.

Ryan had been in love with Fin, forever, but in his eyes, he would never be good enough for her. He has his own demons that he doesn't share, and his dream of making something of himself to fulfil.

Ryan and Jake are going to join the Australian army, the SAS to be exact. Ryan knows this is the best thing for him and Fin. With him gone, she can live a normal life, pursuing her own career, not waiting for someone who may never return. Except, she's all he thinks about, she has his heart but he's too stubborn to admit any of it, to himself and especially to Fin.

Fin has loved Ryan forever; she knew it the first time he touched her hand that first day of school. But he's leaving, and he may not come back, she knows she needs to carry on with her life, her dreams, but the most important part of her belongs to Ryan, and always will. Will they ever get their chance?

This story is simply amazing. It's very well written, with amazing characters, who are strong, likeable and believable. This story conveys the feelings of the characters so well, they jump right off of the page, so much so that parts of this story will bring a tear, or more, to your eye.

A truly amazing book, I had to finish in one sitting because I was swept away in the story desperate to know how it ended. After being dragged through an emotional wringer I was left with a sense of loss as I finished the last page purely because I didn't want it to end.

The story is complex and I don't want to leave any spoilers - this book deserves to be read. Finlay and her brother Jake meet a boy at school who becomes a huge part of their lives. Ryan becomes Jake's best friend and protector of Fin as they grow up he spends a huge amount of time with their family. Ryan had always wanted to join the army and manages to fulfil his dream with his best friend beside him as they eventually make the selection for the SAS. After a tour in Afghanistan Jake goes to visit his sister reuniting Ryan and Fin after a 6 year separation, making them question the past and the feelings that they have for each other.

Full of love and loss this is such a good read, I sat sobbing at various parts full on ugly crying at others. Perfection.

I want to give this book 10 stars as five is no where near enough!!!
This book is Kate McCarthy's finest hour, its one of the best reads of this year and a story that will stay with me for a long time to come.

Ryan Kennedy is fighting a war but its not just against the obvious enemy, as he is a SAS solider in the Australian Army but he is also fighting against demons he has had since the age of 7 and he is not wining.

A young Ryan meets Finlay as he saves her from falling up the stairs on her first day at a new school. Along with Fins brother Jake the three are fast friends, but Fins and Ryan's friendship runs deeper.
Ryan wants to protect her and to make sure she has the best life can offer her, and Finlay just wants Ryan and always will!

Ryan will do whatever it takes to make sure that Fins life is all it can be even if it means leaving the only girl he has ever loved.

The book spans the life of Ryan and Finlay over 5yrs taking the reader on one hell of an emotionally Rollercoaster. I laughed at the guys banter and sobbed at the horror of a all too real war.

This is the second Kate McCarthy book ive read, she has grown into an accomplished author who can evoke feelings into the reader like no other.
I couldn't put this book down, I didn't want their story to end I think what upset me the most was that this war is real happening now and effecting people all over the world, Kate's description of the deployment of the troops certainly struck a cord with me

Its one hell of a read and a tribute to the troops fighting in Afghanistan, loved it !!!!!

I finished this book a few minutes ago, all I can say is Wow, but I will try my best to put together a few sentences.

Well, 5 stars just isn't enough, it was THAT good!

A real rollercoaster of emotions, it's not often that reading a book makes me cry, but this one did. If you are thinking about reading it keep the tissues handy.

I will definitely be looking at other books by this author!

Goodness gracious me, I am seriously heartbroken, gutted, insides ripped apart devastatedly sobbing. I don't read blurbs so i knew nothing of what this was about, but from the first page I knew this was going to hurt.
Ryan and Jake are the perfect boys any girl would want in her life, protective, hot and so caring. Fin was just as perfect as a sister too and her goals were admirable to say the least. I fell in love with all of the characters, each with their own role in putting together such an amazing story.
Ive been to Afghanistan twice with the Royal Air Force and the image depicted from this story was spot on. It brought back so many memories both good and bad, that even if I wanted to I wouldn't have been able to stop reading.
My heart is literally hurting right now. I have cried so much throughout this and I know it's going to be one of those stories that doesn't leave me. If I could I'd give it far more than 5 stars x
