Ryan and Jake have been friends since 5th grade, when Jake and his sister Finlay moved to Fremantle from Sydney. There was an instant friendship between the boys, one that would carry them through life as brothers.
Ryan had problems with his home life, and found himself spending more and more time at Jake's house, slowly becoming a member of his family.
Ryan had been in love with Fin, forever, but in his eyes, he would never be good enough for her. He has his own demons that he doesn't share, and his dream of making something of himself to fulfil.
Ryan and Jake are going to join the Australian army, the SAS to be exact. Ryan knows this is the best thing for him and Fin. With him gone, she can live a normal life, pursuing her own career, not waiting for someone who may never return. Except, she's all he thinks about, she has his heart but he's too stubborn to admit any of it, to himself and especially to Fin.
Fin has loved Ryan forever; she knew it the first time he touched her hand that first day of school. But he's leaving, and he may not come back, she knows she needs to carry on with her life, her dreams, but the most important part of her belongs to Ryan, and always will. Will they ever get their chance?
This story is simply amazing. It's very well written, with amazing characters, who are strong, likeable and believable. This story conveys the feelings of the characters so well, they jump right off of the page, so much so that parts of this story will bring a tear, or more, to your eye.
It conveys the heartache of a war that so many soldiers are fighting, and not just their stories from the front line, but also the stories of those left behind. How life has to carry on as normal, although you're never sure if your loved ones will make it back to you alive, and how you carry on if they don't.
This story conveys real life for so many people, people living with these uncertainties every single day. It is also a true love story from beginning to end; not just of Ryan and Fin, but of Jake and Fin, Jake and Ryan, Ryan and his army buddies, Jake and Fin's parents - it's everything and everyone.
This is simply a book that you have to read, and if I could give more than 5 stars I absolutely would.
Thank you Kate McCarthy for an amazing story that I won't forget.
The story is complex and I don't want to leave any spoilers - this book deserves to be read. Finlay and her brother Jake meet a boy at school who becomes a huge part of their lives. Ryan becomes Jake's best friend and protector of Fin as they grow up he spends a huge amount of time with their family. Ryan had always wanted to join the army and manages to fulfil his dream with his best friend beside him as they eventually make the selection for the SAS. After a tour in Afghanistan Jake goes to visit his sister reuniting Ryan and Fin after a 6 year separation, making them question the past and the feelings that they have for each other.
Full of love and loss this is such a good read, I sat sobbing at various parts full on ugly crying at others. Perfection.
Well, 5 stars just isn't enough, it was THAT good!
A real rollercoaster of emotions, it's not often that reading a book makes me cry, but this one did. If you are thinking about reading it keep the tissues handy.
I will definitely be looking at other books by this author!
Felt the pain and strong connection between Ryan and Fin. They struggled through life knowing that they cared about each other and that there were other problems in the way, which were out of their control, solely Ryan's army posting to Afghanistan.
Loved the storyline and the characters 4/5
Steam factor 3/5
Grip factor 3/5
