We need more like her today. Whatever your political leanings this is a story of a woman who but for circumstances at the time could have become Britain's first woman prime minister. The story takes you from her working class background through her time at Oxford and then she graduated and got a job! Politicians of today take note. Her route into politics as a committed socialist is typical of the time. Her time in government is an eye opener and gives a great insight into the prejudices she had to face firstly as a woman MP and then as a cabinet minister. Controversial she may have been but she tells the story from the heart. No self indulgence whatsoever. A gripping read.
Although the book takes you through the political life of Barbara Castle it gives you a clear in sight to the back room politics and in fighting of clearly every political party. The equal pay act was covered but lacked clear coverage. All in all a very good read for those interested in a period of history where social politics ruled the nation
