A novelist of some repute herself, Chloe Thurlow outlines why this phenomenon has occurred and also how other writers and would-be writers can achieve the same. According to Ms Thurlow, EL James's major achievement was to write a romance and add an erotic component, rather than to write an erotic book with a glimpse of romance. The difference may seem subtle, even minor, but twenty million sales worldwide cannot be explained away by mere subtlety.
As a writing guide, her book describes how to create believable characters, compulsive plots and how to draw in readers through the power of the erotic, rather than the use of pornography. As she says at one point, the difference between erotica and porn is `good writing.' The `Phenomena' provides excerpts from Ms Thurlow's own work, as well of that of other writers, and lists of essential reading and erotic publishers seeking new material and voices. Whether a reader or a writer of the erotic, this is a valuable contribution to what is the fastest growing genre in literature today.
For those who enjoyed EL James's trilogy and would like to know more about the process she went through to achieve such enormous acclaim, and for anyone inspired to turn their own hand to writing erotica, the `Phenomena' is an insider's guide filled with writing tips, tricks and techniques. A novelist herself with several books under her belt, Thurlow gives us a historic view of erotica and provides excerpts from such luminaries as the Marquis de Sade. She discusses the difference between pornographic and erotic - pointing out that one difference, as she puts it, is `good writing,' and leads her readers to a greater understanding of the erotic as a literary genre.
For those serious about writing themselves, Thurlow provides a quick guide on the dos and don'ts of writing erotica, and a useful list of erotic publishers. If you have `Fifty Shades of Grey' on your bookshelf, you'll re-read it with fresh eyes after consuming the `Phenomena.'
Chloe Thurlows `Fifty Shades of Grey Phenomena' explains how EL James changed the way we see erotic fiction, using examples of her own excellent work to highlight her points. Chloe achieves what she set out to do, with this insightful look at the 'phenomena'
Chloe is an accomplished erotic author in her own right (and one of my favourites) and I hope she can ride this current wave of interest in erotic fiction.
There were many examples that I thought were well researched and very helpful along with some great excerpts of other books. I read The Fifty Shades of Grey Phenomena in one afternoon. I was starving for the information even if I didn't know it.
A talented writer, Chole Thurlow give us a greater insight into the genre and how to build strong characters and story-lines. Easy to understand and a gold mine of information, this is a great book
I love the way she breaks down the genre in a way that is easy to understand, and is immensely helpful to other other writers interested in exploring the erotic genre. Chloe uses examples from her own books to highlight the points, a clever way to showcase her own talented writing. An excellent read.
After the explanation of the phenomena known more commonly as simply "50 Shades", Chloe includes a selection of extracts from her own works and some from other authors. The comparison of style, detail and just Chloe's own ability to write absolutely top-class erotica demonstrates why she has a real future in writing ahead of her. Thanks to "50 Shades" erotica will soon be main-stream and acceptable reading for all. I look forward to hearing that Sophie's Secret and all the others are being turned into film.
Chloe's DIY instruction on how to write erotica is fine. However, not everyone can write a book - no matter how much instruction or advice (or even encouragement and support)you give them. But those of you who can, owe it to those of us who can not to continue to write for whatever audience you feel you can best pitch at.
Mummy-porn or daddy-porn, CT writes for both so get in there and enjoy. You will not be disappointed.
