About the Author

Shelby Reed is the author of "Games People Play." She wrote her first romance with Prince Charming -- literally! -- as the hero, and it's been non-stop story spinning ever since. Despite the idealistic place from which she embarked, she's partial to writing realistic, flawed, multi-faceted characters, lush emotion, and the ever-possible happy ending. When not pecking away at the computer keyboard, Shelby enjoys creative projects such as portraiture and decorating, dabbles in Tarot, and lives a bucolic life with her own Prince Charming in North Florida.

By Lucy Reads Romance VINE VOICE on 9 Feb. 2014

I brought this book after hearing about it on a goodreads list and I wasn't disappointed as I read it in one day and absolutely loved it!
The story is set in the world of Avalon an up-scale male brothel with an elite clientèle, and revolves around the lives of Adrian, one of the male escorts and Billie a reporter.
Reed did a great job with developing all the characters and didn't shy away from depicting the shady and sometimes heartbreaking world of prostitution, even in such as elite setting. The romance between Billie and Adrian was both sweet, sexy and believable considering Adrian's profession. Although a romance and therefore a guaranteed Happy Ever After, this was book that made me cry and wonder if they really would be able to be together.
As it published by Ellora's Cave it does have a fairly high level of sex scenes or sexual references but it all felt very natural and part of the plot rather than the author just deciding 'oh lets put in a sex scene we haven't had one of them in a while'.
Overall a fantastic contemporary romance with a slightly grittier edge to it that I really enjoyed.

This book is a heartbreaking tale of the shady world of gigolos and the women who seek them out. It's set in a very select club -Avalon -where affluent women seek out male company. Billie is a reporter for the magazine Illicit that has been granted an in depth interview with one of their most experienced male companions Adrian. She's unsure what to expect from their meeting but from the outset is intrigued by the very suave and sinful escort. Billie goes into her meeting with Adrian expecting something seedy and maybe even demeaning but what she finds is a young man full of charm and guile. Adrian quickly turns the tables on Billie and proceeds to press buttons that she never knew she had. His almost incidental attempted seduction of her wakes her up to challenges she has never before encountered. Deeply attracted to Adrian and unsure just what his motives are Billie finds herself becoming more then a little immersed in the sexy yet remote man. As they get to know each other Adrian takes charge more and it's apparent that his interest in her could reveal a part of himself that he tries to deny. Tragedy strikes when Luke a fellow gigolo feels that his life of excess and debauchery is pointless. Feeling an unrequited love for his friend he commits suicide whilst staying at Adrians appartment. Suspicions run high and Billie finds her new feelings for Adrian tested as he struggles to prove his innocence. This is a book that surprised me. I expected it to be an erotic ride full of sex and thrills. Yes it is a sexy read but the two main characters constantly keep each other at a distance in so many ways. It's a sensuous read full of hot interludes but the author doesn't rush the pace. The build up between Adrian and Billie allows the reader to connect and care about them.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Skinny 6 Oct. 2005
By Jadelyn Cinn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Summary / The Plot - The heroine, Billie is a reporter about to do an expose on gigolos or male escorts for a magazine called Illicit. It will make or break her career and she is anxious to do a good job. But when she meets the hero, Adrian, a suave, debonair and simply sinful male escort, her determination begins to crumble.

The story begins with her going to the male escort club that services high clientele, where the hero works for an interview. There, she meets the "madam", Azure who is secretly in love with Adrian, who permits her to have an interview with Adrian, but warns her that he would not reveal any personal information.

During the interview it turns out that Adrian is a wicked seducer! She struggles with her emotions not to give in. Adrian in turn, although it starts as a game, he can't help wanting her. To him, Billie is wholesome and real, unlike all the other clients......who are trumped up women. Before he knows it, she is affecting his work, and he begins to reveal to her gradually who he really his...

In the midst of the romance are other issues: Adrian has a best friend living a debauched lifestyle of domestic violence and drugs who is in love with him.

Azure, the madam's fight to keep a hold of her best male escort who she holds a torch for.

Adrian not having revealed to his family about his choice of career and Billie trying to keep from her boss at Illicit the secret of his identity that he has entrusted with her.

The Sensuality: I will give this book 2 and a half out of 5 stars for sensuality. Adrian and Billie do not consummate their love, so to speak till the end of the book. However, for those of you that like teasers, there are quite a few scenes of foreplay till then.

The Hero: Adrian is not a one dimensional character. This Hero reminds me of those in Robin Schone's novels, but with a little bit less depth. He is someone with flaws and inner struggles, but still endearing nonetheless. He goes through battles within this book, not only with his love for the heroine, Billie but with how to be truthful with his family, and what I consider one of the crux factors in this book: trying to figure out how to save his best friend and at the same time keep a distance from him, which ultimately leads to tragedy that he also has to walk through.

The Heroine: Strong character, that is tempted but does not easily succumb to the will of the hero. I liked her! Billie called Adrian out anytime he wanted to play games or push her away...

Overall: Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. I really liked the journey that S. Reed, the author took me on. She is very good in giving insight to both Billie and Adrian's feelings in their love-war. The sub-plots were gripping. Some authors have sub-plots that do not actually affect the romance of the hero and heroine, I am not a fan of those kind of books. This book on the other hand, the sub-plots help drive the main plots, and even go as far as make the characters grow and develop as individuals.
This book is not a heavy read (not a lot of pages), but all that takes place fits that of one. It is dynamic and will keep you hooked.

So far I have said nothing but good things about this book, so why did I give it 4 stars and not 5?
I do not think this is a book that one will necessarily read more than once. It could be due to the fact that there are quite a few struggles within this book, both internally and externally by the characters. In other words, almost every character in this book is battling something. There are not a lot of "happy moments" or "fun times"....and each time the hero and heroine have a sensual encounter, it followed up with a confrontation / some form of conflict until the very last scene at the end of the book.

Is it worth reading? Yes.
Is it a personal library keeper? That I am not so sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally some substance to go along with our sex! 15 Sept. 2009
By Erin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Romance today, whether you classify it as "erotica" or merely "romance" and more often than not, has sex in it now. Personally, I love it. I do not love it, however, at the expense of a good plot surrounding those sex scenes. This story has it all. I had read through three quarters of the book before I truly became conscious of the fact that the lead characters had not yet slept together. It was not that they were not sharing hot, sexy, intimate moments. They simply had not "gone all the way" yet. This story had depth to it. Also, it was completely believable. I don't want to get into specific instances because you can read other reviews for that. I simply want to say that this book is easily in my top five of favorites and I'm eager to read more of Shelby Reed's material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shelby Reed is qutie a writer! 14 Jun. 2009
By CMarie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've read over 950 ebooks from sites like Elloras Cave, All Romance, and Samhain. Not quite 10% of what I've read stays with me and the one's that do I always recognize as being the best. These are the stories that I'll go back and reread over and over again. Both Fifth Favor and Midnight Rose are such stories. They broke my heart. I thrilled for the characters and worried that their respective situations could somehow work out; that love would prevail and conquer. Ultimately; these two stories lift the reader up and give them something to really THINK about. Not just 'calgon take me away' reads. No; these two books make the reader FEEL for the characters and involve the reader in more than just reading. A situation arises where the reader is almost part of the storyline. The reader is engaged!
I've read all of Ms. Reed's ebooks. They're all wonderfully written and certainly worthy of taking the time to explore.
Ms. Reed knows how to write; no question about it. I thank her from the bottom of my readers-soul for sharing her imagination and characters with me. I am indeed; one very fortunate reader and one who'll be on the lookout for more creative renderings form the so skilled a fiction writer as is Shelby Reed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, emotional read 3 Jun. 2012

I read this book based on a recommendation I saw from Sylvia Day on Maryse's book blog and would have never chose it due to the dated cover - I really don't like the cover and feel it doesn't do the story justice.

The story is certainly an emotional and so well executed.

The characters are handled so well and the chemistry between Billie and Adrian is so palpable it jumps off the pages at you.

Adrian is such a tortured soul. This man is fighting a lot of inner demons and you feel for him in every way. I felt his character had a lot of depth.

I really connected with Billie. She was a strong character and understood Adrian in a way no-one else did.

I was really rallying for these characters throughout the book and the story was a rollercoaster as these two discovered themselves and each other.

Great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover 6 Jan. 2013
By Michele - Published on Amazon.com

Jeez! I was blind-sided by this book! I stumbled across it thanks to Author Sylvia Day. Normally I read a book and move on to the next, but not with this one. I was drawn in by the Billie and Adrian and fell in love with both of them . I was up in the middle of the night, because I couldn't put it down. Shelby Reed paints a great picture of the story in your mind. It's a roller coaster ride. And because it's still dancing around in my head, it will always be a favorite book of mine. My friends will have to get their own. I'm not lending this one out.
